Great day at the wrecking yard
I scored some great stuff today at the wrecking yard.
Got a dash mounted delay wiper switch with delay module & pigtail for $3 out of a 79 that should give me the badly needed delay wipers in my 78 with little work. Scored a small tail gate band for all of $5 The dealer emblem on it came off easily with no damage to the band. One very tiny needle sized ding that should come out pretty easily, otherwise it just needs some fresh paint to make it perfect. Found a small fuel gauge still in a truck that used to have a factory tach. Unfortunately the hack who grabbed the tach butchered the housing to get it out so it wasn't any good and they ruined the printed circuit too. Scumbag hackers at the yard need a whoopin sometimes. Fuel gauge cost a big $2 Scored a near perfect 74 deep grille shell complete with 350 emblem. Only damage is one mounting screw flange is cracked just a little bit. Just needs a tiny bit of epoxy to solidify the one mount. The rest is flawless. I will probably fix it and sell it but might keep it and see how I like the looks on my truck. Got a good in pan wire harness and about two feet of the external wire harness for my 4L80E to replace and upgrade the damaged connector on mine. The in-pan harness runs for over $100 to get a replacement and the guy at the yard gave it to me for free! Woo hoo. Now the 4L80E can go into my 68 Camaro to tame down the gearing and give me full control over the shift characteristics. Got the 16197427 PCM out of the 4L80E harness donor too for $9 and that included the PCM carrier I yanked out of a whale Caprice that mounts the PCM to the kick panel. The same van I got the PCM & trans harness out of also had a beautify condition two button power window switch plus the matching single button passenger side switch and one perfect power lock switch that I scored for $6 Not a bad day at the yard.

Re: Great day at the wrecking yard
Good scores! That wiper switch looks like the one in my 83. Wonder if it would drop into my 77.... I miss the delay wipers!

Re: Great day at the wrecking yard
You are very lucky. Around here the automotive recycling centers want almost as much or more than new prices for everything - if you can find anything. Plus, anything plastic, rubber, or electronic is fried in the AZ heat, so it should be worh less than elsewhere. On the plus side, the sheet metal parts and whole trucks are generally rust free, but rarely straight. Whole squares are like $2500 -$4000 for decent looking bodies.

Re: Great day at the wrecking yard
I was told that to convert to the delay wipers you also have to have the delay wiper motor to go with the switch. Is this what you plan on doing or is there a way around that?

Re: Great day at the wrecking yard
Not right now as I have plans to use it on my 78 but I will keep you in mind if things change.

Re: Great day at the wrecking yard
I wish I had the 454 to go with that emblem of yours. The 350 emblem on there matches my 78.

Re: Great day at the wrecking yard
Several sources have told me that the motors are the same and all you need is the switch & delay module. I ran out of time this weekend so I didn't get it installed to find out for sure. I will take some pics and verify for sure if it is just that simple.

I had planned on using a cluster housing with a clock but now I will use this small fuel gauge in place of the clock and build a secondary temp gauge for the location the old oil pressure gauge was and use it for oil temp instead. Could be trans temp instead if I had an automatic.

Re: Great day at the wrecking yard
I made an overlay for the Camaro tach to make it fit the shape of the truck dash bezel better and made a matching overlay for an 85 mph optical VSS speedo while I was at it. I was planning on converting the truck to TBI and needed the VSS output for it. I just decided to get rid of the KPH markings and change the numbering to even 10's instead of on the 5's like stock to match the Camaro tach. There was room to change the range to 90 mph so I did it.
I made the numbers larger and only single digits on the Camaro tach overlay so it looked more like a monster tach than the stock Camaro tach does. Below is a pic of the stock Camaro tach for comparison.
