Another coil cutting question, or heating to tweak?

So I cut a full coil off my dually and I think it still needs to come down another 1". Can I cut just a 1/2 coil off? If I do that it the bottom of the spring wont sit in the pocket right, is that ok? I know that heating coils for drop is a no no but is it bad if all I need is 1"

Or

Do I just pony up some $$ and buy some 3" drop coils? I realize thats probably the best option but like everyone else I want to get out of this as cheap as possible

I say YES.
Others say no.
But I've done it at least a half dozen times.

That doesnt work because the top of the spring pocket is ovaled

Correct.
This is what I've tried to say on here before, in another thread.
Line up the top,... don't worry about the bottom.

Re: Another coil cutting question, or heating to tweak?

I've read somewhere where certain types of front coil springs are unsafe to cut. But that was a place that was selling lowering parts. Lol. As far as I would go is the 2 inches you already have, and be safe. So the 3 inch drop coils would be the thing to do. No guessing that way. You'll know whatcha got.

Re: Another coil cutting question, or heating to tweak?

thanks for the help guys, hopefully I can get it pulled apart AGAIN tomorrow.

Keith, I figured it would be ok that what I did with my Blazer before the bags and didnt have any issues.

So, 1/2 coil should get me ~1" right?

Re: Another coil cutting question, or heating to tweak?

1/2 coil= 1" drop,... as a rule,... but not a for sure. Ha.
If you think it will be too much,... cut 1/4 coil.

When it's all said and done,... the coil will be a "given" length.
And it will only compress so much.
The only way to screw up,... is to not get the top seated.

I ususally lay on my back and verify the spring is seated in the upper "D" shaped retainer.
I also mark the front of the spring with a marker or tape.
This will help verify the spring hasn't rotated while you are messing with the lower a-arm and balljoint.
Don't install the shock or the sway bar until you are happy with the ride height.

And,... we need pics!

Thanks for help Keith. I'll get some pics up Monday, I should have it sitting right by then. Just picked it up from paint AGAIN today and it looks soooo much better now
