what years of 12 bolt will fit
I would like to get a 12 bolt housing for my 4X4 72 Jimmy that I can powdercoat and rebuild over the winter. What years will work?
Thanks Mark

Re: what years of 12 bolt will fit
According to the interchange book...72 chevy/gmc truck and 72 blazer/jimmy. One year only. I'm not sure what the difference is between other years. 1970 and up use the same length axle shaft, so it must be some thing minor like a brake issue or something. I think the book considers something to be interchangeable, as something that doesn't require a single bolt to be changed.

Re: what years of 12 bolt will fit
I put a 2WD 12 bolt in my truck and it's a little wider than stock, better than the narrow original...
I think that you can make about anything work from solide axle chevy's. 2WD's will require that you weld on spring perches but that's easy... www.diy4x.com

Re: what years of 12 bolt will fit
Thanks both of you. In my situation welding on spring perches would not be an option as I am trying to have it powdercoated and rebuilt ready for installation to decrease down time. I had my Jimmy tied up for 6 months plus with the 5.3 swap and I would like to be able to swap axles in a weekend.
So anybody have a 72 4X4 12 bolt housing hanging around?

Re: what years of 12 bolt will fit
I believe the difference is the routing of the brake hard lines and the location of the tee. To use the "wrong" year housing you have to relocate the tee or the hose.

Re: what years of 12 bolt will fit
I basically gave my old axle away because I didn't want to store it, sorry... I picked up a 3.73 posi 12-bolt at the Junkyard for $35....

Re: what years of 12 bolt will fit
I have 4-5 local junk yards 5 miles from my house. They have nothing for these old trucks

Re: what years of 12 bolt will fit
I bought a 12 bolt posi from Kingsolver. It fit with no issue's other than as one mentioned above the brake t and the lines were a bit different. MY HEAP IS A 68 the unit from Kingsolver I believe was a 70 or 71. Not sure now. it was as one mentioned above a little bit wideran inch or two.
