Montecarlo rear sub?

Has anyone ever tried using the rear suspension from a 1978-1987 Chevy Monecarlo? Its coil good coil spring style. Thought it might work, but have not checked very close yet.

Re: Montecarlo rear sub?

Just a triangulated 4 link with stamped trailing arms. Not really worth the effort IMO. You can buy an aftermarket 4 link for a couple bills, or make your own cheaper.

Re: Montecarlo rear sub?

Who would have the best price for aftermarket rear suspension for a 56? Welding is not a problem, just on a budget. Thanks.

Summit has a competition engineering parallel 4 link for about $200, but you'd still need a pan-hard bar. Suicide doors has universal triangulated 4 links for $300.

Re: Montecarlo rear sub?

yes-I've done that. Worked well & it was cheap. The easiest is to use Crysler 5th ave, leaf springs. hanger & all. Greal ride.

I also installed a G body rear suspension in a 66 Rolls Royce. I used a 9" rear.

Re: Montecarlo rear sub?

The PO that I bought my truck from had this set up using a G-body frame (Monte Carlo, Grand Prix, Grand National). I like it because it rides well. It allows for a car gas tank to be mounted behind the rear end. I converted it over to Air Bags with aftermarket boxed trailing arms. The floor of the bed needed to be raised 2" to clear the kick up of the frame.

He's looking for coil springs, not leafs.

Re: Montecarlo rear sub?

PDW HOTRODS, I used the whole frame on my 1948 Panel. I cut off the factory section behind the coils and used 2x4 box to replace it. The only bad thing is that the frame I think is higher than S10 frames. It didn't matter to my because I put a back seat in my panel and the fuel cell is in a conpartment behind the seat.

Re: Montecarlo rear sub?

I already used the front suspension in my 53 truck. I saved the complete rear of the frame thinking it might work for a future project. Now I'm starting a 56, and thought it might work. The rear is narow so I can mini tub it and run biger tires.
