compressor help (air ride)
hey guys quick question about compressor relays. im running 2 viair 444 compressors and a relay for each. on the 12v power wire from the battery to the relays i installed a 30 fuse, i keep blowing the fuse though if the compressors run for a while.
my question is, with the 2 relays (one for each compressor) do i really need to run a fuse between them and the batt. or if i do should i nuse a bigger fuse like a 50 maxi fuse?

Re: compressor help (air ride)
I just googled it and the max amp draw for each compressor is 38 amps, so it sounds like you need a bigger fuse. You should definitely have a fuse near the batt. because if the wire ever gets rubbed and grounded it will start a fire real quick. I had an amplifier in an 84 tempo and it got shorted out one day when I was leaving for lunch at highschool, the excessive current draw caught my alternator on fire and I was out there trying to blow it out, luckily someone had an extinguisher and they put it out for me before there was too much damage. The moral is if I would have had a fuse it would have never happened. Also as a side note what gauge wire are you running from the battery to the relays? I would run a minimum of #8 or maybe even #6 because 80 amps is a pretty big draw. Too small a wire will cause voltage drop to the compressors which will cause alot of heat, this will significantly shorten their lives.

Re: compressor help (air ride)
On the last build I did, I used 8ga wire and an 80-amp maxi fuse (distribution block type) at the battery and ran 10ga wiring to the relays. I wouldn't do any smaller than that for any of my builds.
