Has anyone upgraded their wiper motor

Has anyone tried upgrading their wiper motor, from a newer model vehicle that works faster? I know it can be done on classic cars, but didnt know about the 73-87 style

Re: Has anyone upgraded their wiper motor

dang me 3... I wonder if you can graft in a NBS wiper motor in there..? that would be slick... I need to take a gander at the wiring diagram to see what all the wires are for..

Re: Has anyone upgraded their wiper motor

Huh... Just looked at alldata and it confused me...and I generally understand wiring schematics... the one for the 87 shows a circuit layout with wire colors, but confusing none the less. They both have 5 wires.... the NNBS is what I am referencing... its wiring diagram is confusing comming from the wiper washer switch... You have MUX1 MUX 2, wash - high signal (power when wash is requested from switch), and power and ground to the motor.... Not sure how to interpret the MUX 1 and 2 becuase the diagram is wierd. I have attached an almost identical schematic *cough* from alldata for reference only... anyone can make heads or tails...

Re: Has anyone upgraded their wiper motor

I think, the hardest part would be finding a later model wiper motor from a car or truck, that would bolt on without to much modification?

Faster!? The wipers on my '80 are so fast on high that I'm surprised the blades don't come flying out! I can see wanting a delay, but not anything faster.

The one on my 87 is very slow. High is slower then any other vehicle I have on low.

I used to think people were nuts for calling our wipers slow. All of mine were always plenty fast enough, including my Suburban. But now within the last year, it has started to get slower.

I think the motors just get worn out enough to create slow operation, but still work. Rather than simply crapping out like most wiper motors on other vehicles.

Re: Has anyone upgraded their wiper motor

Something I just thought of: Have you tried measuring voltage at the wiper motor? Perhaps the problem isn't with the motor, but with the wiring and/or the switch? I wonder if you hook up a relay and pull voltage directly from the battery if that would help? It does wonders for headlights, so it certainly couldn't hurt to try.

Re: Has anyone upgraded their wiper motor

i had the slow wiper issue and when I nabbed the little computer and delay switch out of another truck it was still slow and would act goofy on the delay.
I bought a new replacement motor at the zone and now its all bueno.
fast is much faster (fast enough for me, anyway)

Sounds plausible to me, I've done this with headlights many times. It's easy to gain an extra 2 volts depending on the condition of the wiring.

My old '79 had "manual" wipers...had to tie a string to each side and pull it through the wing window. My '73 only has 2 speeds - fast and faster. Makes me wonder if I shouldn't REDUCE my voltage...

Re: Has anyone upgraded their wiper motor

heck my 78 jimmy wipers fly but i've been looking to see about putting an 89 burb tilt with newer wipers and delay, but can't seem to find that out yet.but really only wanted the tilt it would seem that will work lol
My old '78 olds had the "manual" wipers too...quit while driving used phone cord and rainx lol
check the motor copper strip, seen these corrode to dust

Re: Has anyone upgraded their wiper motor

i put a column in my 73 blazer out of a 90 burb it think, and i took the wiper motor, to make it work you also need the delay box that plugs into the column, looks like a mini amp, the wiper motor bolts right in with the expection of the little part that attaches the motor to the wiper arms, so back to the junl yard where if i remeber right a late 70's has the old style wiper arm with the new style mount to go to the motor. but the crapy part, i never wired it in!!!!!!!!!!!1
