motor noise
i think i have a bad lifter or it just not adjusted right. i have a 327 sbc in my 61. the heads are rebuild and i have a new cam and lifters and the bottom end is rebuild with under 500 miles on it. the cam and lifter have less then two tanks of gas on them.
so when i start it up i have a really quiet noise its a ticking sound and when it gets warm up its gets a little louder. it never really loud. but its still there. what does it sound like to you. |

Re: motor noise
Did you use a good breakin oil additive when you started the engine and ran the cam breakin? Are you running a oil that has sufficient ZDDP for flat tappet cams? If you're not sure what I'm talking about, take some time to read here.....http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=381780
If you adjust the valve lash again, and it comes back, it is possible that a rocker stud is working loose. It is not uncommon for this to happen to rebuilt heads that retain the pressed in studs. It seems that if the heads got a little too hot during the cleaning process, that expands the casting around the studs. This can be checked by putting a straight edge on top of all the rocker studs. They should all be the same height. I found this out the hard way after several hours of greif.

Re: motor noise
Take a piece of rubber hose about 1/2" in diameter and about 2 feet long, put one end to your ear and move the other end around the engine where you think the noise is coming from. This works like a doctors stethescope, and will narrow the location of the noise down considerably.
A noise that gets louder when the engine is warm could be several things. A lifter that is bleeding off oil pressure too soon as the oil gets warmer(thinner). A gasket leak that is opening wider as the two surfaces are expanding when the engine gets warmer. Hopefully it's just a rocker arm out of adjustment. As the oil gets thinner the noise will become a little louder.--Keep us posted, Jeff.
