Vacuum hoses

I need to change out the vacuum lines. I think they are original. Are they all the same size or are some bigger than others? 350 engine.

TIA!

Re: Vacuum hoses

I went to the local NAPA and purchsed 20' of different sizes and just started at the fron tand worked my way back. I also removed many feet of hose that was not really needed and cleaned up the engine compartment, a lot. My 84 is a lot cleaner than it used to be.

Re: Vacuum hoses

So take one off, go to the parts store, buy a new one, replace. Then repeat for all of them? Do they just sell sets? Or what sizes are they so I can go buy some of each?

Re: Vacuum hoses

Now she's backfiring. When I gun it for a couple seconds while driving then take my foot off the gas fast, it backfires out of the drivers side exhaust.

It did it once on the passenger side on my way to getting parts for the tune up.

Now its on the drivers side. It has true dual exhaust.

Also, I just looked under the hood to see how much of the lines I would need and found some have different connections on the end and are not just pieces of tubing by themselves. They appear to be special for those areas and get wide and thicker at the connections. Those will be done last I guess when I can take them in and get the right replacements.

Will replacing the vacuum leaks fix the backfire?

Re: Vacuum hoses

I would if the reg didn't expire a few months ago. We'll see if I can make it there without a cop getting behind me. Thanks.

Re: Vacuum hoses

Not yet. Haven't found the time. Hopefully this weekend I can get on it. I hate seeing it just sitting there in the street.

Re: Vacuum hoses

I went down to Autozone and they had about 4 inches of 1/4 vacuum lines. The rest was random sizes of fuel line. Went to PepBoys and found about the same thing.

Will fuel lines work for vacuum lines? They have those in the sizes I need but I can't find anywhere that has enough of the vacuum lines.

TIA.

Re: Vacuum hoses

Yes they will work as long as they are the same size everytime I went to autozone they had a big selection of hoses in the back but fuel line will work the difference between fuel lines are they are made to take more pressure

Re: Vacuum hoses

Look out back, the ones I've dealt with usually have rolls of various diameters. I did use fuel line on my PCV and brake booster.

Figure what sizes you need and go for it. You can cut small pieces from your existing lines to get the correct diameters. An inch piece will usually be long enough to get past the flared end and into the correct size for a given line.

Re: Vacuum hoses

I bought some fuel line of the needed sizes. Thanks. I was just wondering if they would work or somehow cause some other problem. I will try to use these.

They had no selection in the stores. Just empty rolls.

Re: Vacuum hoses

FYI for those looking to switch out their lines:
Well, I took the truck out for a little drive today after mowing the lawn. Then decided to pop the hood and start switching out vacuum lines. Found out most are 5/32 and not 3/16, 1/4, and 3/8 as I was told on my post in the engines and drivetrain forum. I rigged up some using zip ties using the fuel lines, but they aren't that easy to pinch down with zip ties. I found the zip ties gave out before the hose got tight.
I am out of town for work for the next 3 weeks so when I get back I guess I'll have to try to find 5/32.
