This shouldn't be this complicated, Horn button
I'm having a heck of a time with my horn button.
Here's what I have. In this pic I'm holding the turn signal cam into the steering wheel adapter with the contact spring and plunger dropped into the hole. Problem is, plunger and spring are no where near long enough to come in contact with the plate the horn button snaps onto. am I missing pieces? Or how do I make this work? Thanks |

Re: This shouldn't be this complicated, Horn button
I had the same wheel, I wouldnt use that wheel, had my button come loose and the horn went off in the middle of the night, cops woke me up.....I picked up a nice 92 GMC wheel with everything cheaper than the grant wheel and adapter kit.

Re: This shouldn't be this complicated, Horn button
i just took a piece of "hard" wire and wrapped the end of the wire in the horn kit and stuck it out about 1/2 in. in a loop and stuck it down in the white thing and ran the wire to the button. clear as mud? and yes these button can pop off and the horn will stay on, had the cops wake me up one night too but my horn got stuck in my stock steering wheel...... and also the plate just grounds into the steering wheel so as long as the wire is touching down in the cylinder and hooked to the brown ring it will work when the horn button is installed with the spring behind it it holds the brown ring up until you push it down were it touches the metal of the steering wheel which completes the ground for the circuit

Re: This shouldn't be this complicated, Horn button
I did mine with the Grant wood steering wheel and kit. You need to use pieces from the existing horn and the Grant kit. That's the only way I got mine to work and it stays on fine. I should have done a write up but just did it. You need to think it thru, I remember I used the small existing horn contact and cut the Grant piece and made it work. It can be done.

Re: This shouldn't be this complicated, Horn button
It has been awhile since I did mine, but I remember that it was a little confusing. If you cant figure it out let me know and I can pull mine apart to figure out how you do it. I do remember that you use some of the original parts like stated above, also a wire connects to the fiber plate but I cant remember where it goes to. Sorry I'm not more help.

Re: This shouldn't be this complicated, Horn button
Thanks guys, the story about the horn staying on when the button pops off is what made me figure out how it works. Now I just need a spring and a wire to go to the plate. I'll post up with what I figure out. Thanks again

Re: This shouldn't be this complicated, Horn button
I ditched the PO's Grant wheel and re-installed the OEM 17" wheel. After I did it, I was amazed how well it handled with the stock wheel.

Re: This shouldn't be this complicated, Horn button
I didn't see that you were missing the wire the first time that I read this, you def. need that. I found this link on how to hook up a horn with pictures of how everything goes together (it's on a jeep, but it is very similar to how you hook it up in our trucks, look at post #11). Hope you get all the parts you need and get it together soon.

Re: This shouldn't be this complicated, Horn button
Thanks guys. I was missing the wire and the spring. Missing the wire confused me about how the button would complete the circuit and missing the spring just made me think the spring was suppose to go under the plate, not the button. I got it figured out now and will post up when I get it together, still need to get a spring. thanks.
