How to test a Tach ?

I have a cluster I picked up for 35 bucks and I want to see if the tach is any good thanks for the help. It is a 8cyl tach.

if you have a cable, attach it to a drill.

I just take the harness and connect it to the tach head... take the red wire to the battery post and the brown wire to the coil...hmm negative side... and ground the bezel metal case to the rad cradle when I'm testing them, beats installing them.

I just installed my tach dash and could only get 2500 rpm max. It worked prior to the rebuild of the truck. I hooked up the green to the negative side of the coil and the red or pink I think to the ignition unfused in the fuse block. There are 2 terminals one side didn't work the other works but can only get 2500 rpm out of it. Is that the wrong place for the switched ignition wire?
