Can a dually be converted to a SRW - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I am looking for a 73-87 4x4 crew cab long bed for a 67 crew cab project I am going to start, the only problem is all the 4x4's I keep finding are dually's. Can I convert one to a single rear wheel fairly easily or should I just keep looking?

Easy to do. Remove the fenders and swap the axel.

Easier. Swap the bed and the axle. When you pull dually fenders off, you'll leave a big, unfinished fender opening.

So what axle will be in it with the dually and what should I use for the single rear wheel axle, probably a 14 bolt full floater? Are the dually axles a lot narrower than a regular axle?

Dually axles are about 3" narrower than a standard. Find a SRW axle and bolt it in. My bet is that if your dually bed is in decent shape, you can sell it and the axle to someone looking to do the opposite!

I think the dually axles are wider than a single wheel axle. This is why mounting HMMWV wheels to the dually axle brings the tires back into about the same as a SRW axle. The Cab and Chassis dually rear axles are narrower, but the regular dually axles are wider.

You're right, I had a brain fart. C&C are the narrowest, SRW a bit wider, then dually.
