1959 GMC 250 series 1 ton Massive Conversion
Well I am new to the thread. I have been impressed with the level of technical knowledge of the people. I have a 1959 GMC 1 ton, 270 Inline 6, SM 420 trans, and a big 1 ton 5.14 (I believe) to 1 ratio rear end.
I am going to drop a TBI 454 in for an engine, a SM 465 transmission, NP 205 transfer case, and a corporate 14 bolt rear end with the matching front end. I am heading to the junkyard tomorrow and am looking for advice on what rear end would swap in the easiest. As far as I know the width of the frames between a 1/2 ton and the full 1 ton are the same (34 inches). I am also seeking advice on upgrading to power brakes. I have seen kits that bolt to the frame on 1/2 ton trucks so you can keep the pedal position. I am seeking the same for my truck. One last thing is steering. I would like to change out the gear box so I can upgrade to power steering. I was thinking about grabbing the steering box out of the truck that I am grabbing the front end out of. Has anyone done that kind of swap with one of these trucks? Thanks guys! |

I think that probably mid 70's through 80's eight lug is what I would be looking for. Most of my buddys around here (Yakima Valley) ho are serious about Chev or GMC 4x4 trucks convert them to eight lug for the floating rear axle.

Its a matter of welding on new spring perches and setting pinion angle. Its super easy on any axle! But the Ford exploder rear ends are a direct bolt on Im told. They have 31 spline axles and most have posi.

Right on, ill have to check out those fords. Heading to the junkyard in the morning. I would really like to stay all GM but ill see what happens. I am still curious about if anyone has put a modern steering box in one of these 1 ton trucks.

I'm in the process of doing the same thing. C&C 14B bolted right in to mine...didn't even have to modify the drive shaft.

You mention a transfer case and power steering but not a front axle. What is your plan for the front?

Steve that is funny, im from Bainbridge island as well.
Anyways the junkyard trip went well. Ended up finding a 4.10 geared corporate 14 bolt full floating rear end and the matching front out of a 1979 GMC high sierra. Got the front leafs, gear box, and all the linkage as well. Measured the rear end tonight seems like a bolt in, the leaf spring perches are in the same place and the whole unit seems like the same length as well. |

Love those GMCs. I have some turn signals in the for sale section. They are the hardest part to find on 58-59 GMCs.

By the way, the plans changed a little bit. I ended up going with a NV4500 and an NP241 transfer case.
