update about ghetto carb job, wiper cowl and a random question about my 82

so im sure most of you remember the hack job the previous owner of my truck did to wire tie the choke and high idle closed and how i cut them off last week to try that. well that didn't really work either. high idle still did not kick in and i was still sitting there having to feed it gas. well i took it to my real mechanic and he came up with an edelbrock choke linkage kit as seen below. he said there still might be some adjusting that needs to be done as it was 60 degrees this morning and wasn't cold enough for the high idle to kick in.

also i was having a leak on the interior of my passenger side every time it rained or i washed it. thinking it might be the wiper cowl i finally got that added last week. but now me thinks i put a bracket on backwards as there seems to be too much space between the cowl and windshield. sorry for the crappy pic but the 2 end brackets i think i put on backwards and its pushing it out a little. we got a little rain this morning and there is still a leak but not as much.

and finally, what are these 4 holes in my tailgate for? is there a chrome piece that bolts into the tailgate?!

The holes are for a tail gate band. Alot of trucks have them

When you first start your motor when it's cold does the choke plate on the carb close abit. Just pull the top off the aircleaner and open the throttle half way and the choke plate should close. If that's working all right then you need to adjust the high idle screw.
It's hard to find and hard to get to. Look under the vacuum pot close to the carb. There's a screw under there. Turn it in before starting your motor and you should see the throttle arm open slightly. Fire it up and if it's not high enough or is too high adjust it when running.

yeah i had the high idle jacked all the way up. on cold mornings when it did kick in it worked perfect. but that was maybe 1/5 cold days that it kicked in. the others i had to sit there and baby the gas to keep it alive.

You just need to bend the choke rod that goes from your new choke to your carb. Then when you crack the throttle open to start it cold the choke should go on the high idle cam.

On my truck, I have to hold the accelerator to the floor for a second (before starting) to let the fast idle engage, then start it.

the blazer one will not fit if you dont flip the handle on the tailgate.

Re: update about ghetto carb job, wiper cowl and a random question about my 82

welp, cross my fingers i think we have a fix for the cold starting. got in gave it a full mash to the floor and a BOOM fired right up and stayed up. i do however think the high idle is set way to high since he couldn't test it.

which with that said leads me to my next question, is an aftermarket tach needed?

I knew the blazer wouldn't fit but I didn't know you could just flip the handle and it would work....does the handle still work fine upside down?

They mean "flip" as in relocate the handle to the inside of the tailgate with a handle relocator kit. It will work just the same, it's just on the inside of the gate instead of the outside. The reason for this is that the blazer panel doest have a spot for a handle. Some people opt for this to get a smooth look without having to shave the tailgate.
