Help me identify my front end

This is the front end in my 79 k10. I was told it had been replaced but I don't know. How do I figure out the gear ratio? I can't seem the find any numbers or markings on it. What do I look at to figure out what kind and ratio it is?

looks like a 10 bolt, there is an old trick to finding the gear ratio by turning the wheels but i dont know the exact procedure, might be easiest to open it up and count the teeth or find the markings on the gears themselves

Re: Help me identify my front end

You pretty much have to either open it up or do the "spin the wheel and count the driveshaft turns" methods to determine the gearing. Even if the axle were stamped with the factory gear ratio, these trucks are over 30 years old and lots of parts have been changed in that amount of time.

I took the cover off of the diff and counted the ring and pition teeth. 43 divided by 14 right? It came out to 3.071. Does that sound right or didn't I count the right thing?

Dunno the exact number it should be, but you used the right math formula. Ring / Pinion=Ratio
