69 axle swap
I just bout a 69 swb, and I have all the 5 lug stuff from a 79 truck. Do i just simply swap the axles in the rear end? or are there stuff to it? I guess im just asking if they will work?

Re: 69 axle swap
You will need to use the whole rear end. The axles are different lenghts. Jim

Re: 69 axle swap
You can also purchase aftermarket 5-lug axles that will bolt right in to your '69 rearend.
(around $300 a set)

Re: 69 axle swap
to change the front to a five lug you just need to replace the spindles and buy upper and lower ball joints for a 71-72 if you have a whole 5 lug rear it will just un bolt and the new five lug rear will bolt right in

Re: 69 axle swap
Rear axle widths changed in '70. Some people have machined a spacer for the '65-69 rear axle housing and used those to take up some space. If you have a 12-bolt rear end, the axle length should be 30 1/4-inches.The part number for that axle should be 3993605.
In '70, the axle length changed to 31 11/32-inches. That part number should be 334360. Usage for that axle is supposed to be '70-81 C-10 Chevy and 1500 GMC's, Blazer and Jimmy 4WD only; 1970 C-10 Chevy and 1500 GMC truck, Blazer and Jimmy 2WD with 12-bolt axle. So, you'd need a spacer about 1 3/32-inches thick to take up that space, and allow you to run the '70-81 axle in a '65-69 housing. Axle housings changed for '73, to accomodate the leaf springs of those trucks. Even though the axle lengths are the same through '81, the housings don't interchange.

Re: 69 axle swap
Quote:
No need to change ball joints. I would use all the steering components, also, including the steering box. The '79 rear axle is a leaf spring type and will not just bolt in. (maybe easier,... if the '69 is also a leaf sprung truck,... but if it has rear coil springs,... you will need to weld on axle perches and figure out a new mount for the panhard bar) Search around in the Suspension Section. This topic is discussed every day.

Re: 69 axle swap
The PO did the earlys 70s front end swap for my truck and they just bolt right up but why not just swap the whole crossmember from the newer truck? Youd be better off selling the rear end and finding a 5 lug 69 rear end if your going to swap the whole thing out, but i did see not to long ago a guy on here fabbing a newer rear end to fit on his 67-72 truck(forgot wich year it was). Go to the search bar on this section of the forum and you will find a lot of 5 lug swaps for these trucks and that should help you get and idea of how and what works or at least helped me a lot

Re: 69 axle swap
Have your "old" axles welded & redrilled 5 lug.
