I have a '99 Silverado, 222000 mi. gears in transfer case started jumping & stripping. Pulled unit out and tore it down to find failure. Used transfer cases costs $900-$1000. Can I rebuild less or bite the bullet and get another one?

I've replaced bearings and a few gears in a nissan trans, best thing to do is take a breakdown picture and identify what parts you need, then go to the dealer and price the parts out, might want to also check these.

I found out it doesn't take long for the parts price to jump up more than a used or even rebuilt transmission. Don't think your transfer case is a complicated as the over engineered jap trans but some issues I ran into:

1. the gear spacing was shimmed so you had to measure the play and spacing before you disassembled because you have to re-shim after replacing gears to get the same spacing and play.
2. replace gears as sets, I had a cracked 5th gear and replaced two other gears, doesn't take long to wear out new gears with high mileage ones plus you might get a loud whine if you don't.
3. use loctite on any pressed on bearings.

Don't think you'll have any problem rebuilding it as long as you pay attention to how it came apart.
