Hi,

On the drivers side, there is this lever. It looks like to the right it says "right tank," but I can't read what the top part says. I only have one gas tank.

switching from one tank to another and yes it was an option on my 71 super, camper set up had a fuel door on each side of the truck,as well as a camper electric plug on drivers side

Yup, selector for aftermarket or dealer installed aux. fuel tank. You say you only have one tank.... look at the underside of that valve and see if there's another fuel line leaving it, and trace it out. You might get a surprise.

The sticker says "main tank" at the top.

I had one of those on a 1972 swb. It did not have the plate though. I assumed it was an after market valve from an auto parts store. It had a saddle tank and the filler was by the rear wheel making it a PITA to put gas in after it was lowered. I think it was after market due to the square design, or was it a dealer installed accessory? Either way I learned something new.

I have the same lever and it was stock on my 72 with aux tanks.

Kind of hard to switch between tanks, move it around a little and don't force it.

I wonder if you had 2 tanks at some time? New bed? Strange

I have one in my '69. No sign of any extra tanks though.

Does anyone nows where you can still get one of those switches at?I have been looking and cant seem to find one.Going to add tanks to my 70 GMC 3500.Thanks Tony

Try a marina. In the next town over from me there is a boat dealer attached to a hardware store. In the hardware side of the business I found on that was identical to the one my truck came with. [I stupidly dropped a wrench on the pot metal selector handle. It snapped right off.]

The salesman said they are the same as boat tank selectors.

Thanks for the replies. So should I just leave the lever position it's in now? I don't want to risk breaking something.

Those valves have a tendency of wanting to freeze up.
Don't try & force it. Breaking the handle is one thing, breaking the valve is a whole different animal. If the valve breaks "between" tanks, or on the auxiliary tank (that isn't there?), you'll be under the truck plumbing the fuel line around the valve. Really not that difficult a chore just a PITA lying on your back working overhead.
