Quick coil spring question...is this (pic inside) spacer stock or added? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I replaced the rear suspension in my 72 yesterday with 4" drop springs and shocks from Brothers. I went ahead and put everything back together the way it was, but my buddy that was helping me asked about it and it got me to wondering, are the round spacer "pucks" on top of my springs factory pieces or something that a PO has added? Seems to me like with everyone lowering these trucks, I would have ran across something about just taking these out to get an inch and a half or so, but working on mine was the the first time I've noticed them. Pretty clear in the pic what I am talking about...between the top of the spring and the frame.

It must have been added for more clearance because I've never seen one on here or in the junkyard.

Looks like he bought 4 inch drop springs but only wanted a 3 inch drop. I've never seen one of those spacers on our trucks.

I thought it might have been added because the bolt that goes down through the frame and into the spring had about 2" of exposed threads when everything was buttoned up, so I think it was a case of "hey look, that bolt's long enough, let's just use it." Good new is, it looks like I just found myself about an inch and a half of free drop

And for what it's worth, here is a couple pics of the two springs I pulled out, with a new 4" drop spring in between for comparison. One of the old springs was completely shot, collapsed on one end. I have no idea what the ones that were in there were (stock, drop, how much, etc), but they're gone now, so that's what's important.
