Advance Kit Question

I bought an HEI advance kit and it came with three sets of springs. I'm not sure which ones to use. They are for different advance curves. Does anyone know which one would be the better set for my setup? Stock 350, 625 Carter, headers, TH350.

Thanks!

go with the heavy springs first....advance the timing in about 5
degrees at a time till it starts hard or pings...
back it down at smaller amounts till no ping or starts fine..
the heavy spings will keep full timing out as long as possiable
the lighter springs kick it in faster....
you can tell the differences with your timing light....when you rev. your engine and the mark quits moving on the balancer...
are you having a problem???
a nice msd dist. also allows the max swing of the weights to be adjusted asto get more timing out of the bottom end...making the exhaust temp less and so on....

Which kit did you buy? I bought a Comp Cams kit, and it worked perfectly. The instructions told me which springs to use. If I can remember right, you want 36º total timing(mechanical advance only) all in by 3000rpm.

Scott,

there's more to it than just sticking on some springs. To correctly setup your timing, you need to limit vacuum advance too.

Check this article.

Thanks guys. Wow Mike, there is a lot more to it than I thought. I have been having some starting problems, so somebody told me that I should update some of the stuff on the dist. For instance, the weights and springs, cap, and rotor. I only have the $$ right now for the weights and springs so that's were I'm at now. I'll start with the heavy springs and see where it leads me.

Thanks again!
