Can't put into park??

Hey guys and girls...Just got home and my 1997 Z71 will not go into park. I have tried evrything I can think of,but still won't go into park. Any ideas would be great. Thanks in advance, Z

All Park is, is a pawl that moves into a lock to keep the gearbox from allowing the vehicle to roll.

When I put mine into Park, I press the emergency brake and be sure it won't roll, then put it into the Park position. That takes the load off of the pawl.

If that doesn't work, then you may have a mechanical problem preventing it from engaging.

Does it not show on the indicator as being in park need more info? It could be the cable needs adjusted or is broke.

So we can assume it moves into all gears fine but just won't go back into park? Sounds like the linkage may need adjusting. Has the tranny been worked on lately? The brake pedal has to be depressed to move the shifter. Maybe the link between the pedal and shifter has been tampered with or just needs adjusting.
