Power Steering

I am in major need for power steering. i dont like the fact that it gets away from me in a corner when i step on it with manual steering. what is the newest year of truck that i could steal the power steering off and have it bolt up to my truck with NO fabrication? or just the cheapest way to get power steering for it.

The newest year is 67 or 68. This is the external cylinder style and it is a total bolt-on. It all goes on the linkage. You don't have to do anything to the gearbox.

With the slow ratio's used for trucks, just adding power steering might not fix this to your liking. My 67 stepside was a power steering truck but had the same problem...the steering wasn't fast enough to control the rear in a quick turn under throttle. I'm running a ZZ572 and a 4.10:1 posi rear and the torque will break loose any tire that fits under the rear. In my case, quicker steering was required. Early classics makes a fast ratio power gearbox and a pittman arm to match it up to your front linkage. They also have the bracketry for mounting the pump. Pumps are available from Summit for $119.00. The setup looks like the diagram below which also shows a rack and pinion conversion and an external cylinder setup. The external cylinder just reduces the steering effort, but the ratio stays the same and you might have to replace the relay rod. So, if your truck hangs it's rear out as fast as mine does the external cylinder or the stock 18:1 ratio steering box will probably not be fast enough to resolve your problem.

You can use the power steering box from a 1973-87 Chevy or GCM truck and it will bolt right in. I used a 79 Chevy truck complete front suspension with the steerign box in my 67 extended cab truck.

Note that the link posted above is not for a "no fabrication" conversion. It involves replacing the steering gear, which requires modifying the frame or using an aftermarket adaptor plate, and shortening the intermediate shaft.

The only true bolt-in swap is the external cylinder type, which would have been the system offered on 67 (or 68) and earlier trucks at least back to 63. 60-62 may also work, but I can't be sure without seeing one first.

X2 I found it was cheaper to get one from 73 and up model than one for 67-72 and it bolts right in. you can also use the pump for these same years. I believe, I used a 73 line as well.

I once converted a 69 GMC to power steering. The gear from a 76 bolted right on. For the 67-72 trucks, 1967 is the only model that does not have frame clearance for the box conversion. More recently, I put a 79 box on a 72. No problem.

Sorry, I should have looked at your sig. Yes, a 70 will have the frame dimple needed to clear an integral PS box.
