What's involved switching from a manual to auto - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My son is getting a 66 lwb w/283 soon and he wants to convert it to an auto from the three on the tree. We already have a turbo 350 so he plans to go with that trans. Can anyone shed some light on what's needed for trans mount, drive shaft mods, e-brake changes, or anything else we need to be aware of?

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

You'll have to cut the 3 speed crossmember out. It will not be needed and will be in the way.

you'll need a transmission crossmember. One from 73-87 will work just fine.

Your drive shaft modified to fit the new transmission. in my old LWB I got rid of the 2 piece and went with a single drive shaft.

I don't think that you'll have to mess with the parking brake as the 66 didnt use the trans crossmember like the earlier years did.

Although you already have the th350 if its going to be a daily driver consider using a 700r4. It will be more enjoyable to drive and will save quite a bit in gas money
