CL Score!

Finally payed off sitting on top of CL like a hawk. Ran across this:
**FREE** 1973 Chevy Truck (you must tow/haul it away) (Owasso)
Date: 2010-11-02, 8:54AM CDT
1973 Chevy Truck, minimal rust, unknown engine condition; no charge (free) if you tow or haul it away.

Had a tow truck in his driveway 30 minutes after it was posted. Has rusted out cab floors/rockers/corners and one door is trash, fenders are pretty rotted out, bedsides are poor. But, it's a non AC cab and has a 3 speed saginaw (I think) and I think a 350. I need some good donor parts for my '74 and am thinking I will make it a non AC truck, so this will help a ton.
I guess now I will have to start trying to part some of these trucks out and get rid of the junk I don't need.

The guy even said he thinks he knows where the title is and will call me if he gets his hands on it, same with the keys. All in all, can't beat free! Wrecker driver wouldn't even take any money from me.

Re: CL Score!

Never got the story why it was parked, but the guys dad bought it new and then the son got it and now he just wanted it out of his yard. Wrecker driver said they were having to cut down small trees around it, lol.
Looks like they put new tires on it, and parked it. You can tell the two that were facing the sun more, they are rotted out bad, but have great tread on them!

Will get it inside the shop before the weekend and get everything I want off of it and get it hauled off ASAP. My poor parking long behind the shop is getting full again, and it's my fault this time.

Re: CL Score!

Helluva score! My guess is that truck was originally a 6 banger truck...

Manual brakes, manual steering, 3 on the tree, no engine size emblem on the grille...

I dig that 3 on the tree column. You don't see those much in squares...

Re: CL Score!

Need to get the engine ID'd that's in it. Shows it came out with a 307, but surely somewhere during its life someone tossed in a 350, surely.
I had been sweating how I was going to do the AC to non AC swap, now it'll be easy peesey.
Not sure if it's real excitement or my medications (damn allergies), but I'm giddy like an 18 year old on prom night.

Nice find! Been scouring CL a lot myself lately. Got an 89 CC 3500 for $500. Found it looking for Elky parts.

I am going to go with 307. I think they were only offered in 1973 in a half ton and looking at the pics, that is an awful small harmonic balancer.

Re: CL Score!

Going off the tags on the truck, it's been parked for 11 years, so good chance it is still the factory 307 sitting in it. Will know for sure this weekend when I start tearing it all apart.

Funny thing is, we got the hood up, now it won't shut. The top of the support was covered in rust chunks/debris, I finally looked up at the hood and seen the bottom front edge is totally rusted out and what's laying on the support is the remains. The short wrecker trip over must have jarred it all out. Not worth fighting to try and shut the hood, it'd just fold in half I'm sure. Going to hit all the bolts with pb blaster tomorrow, and again on Friday and a 3rd time Saturday morning when I start knocking stuff off. Still bet I twist half the bolts in half. Be a good time to try out my shiny new 3/8 impact sockets and my new MAC 3/8 impact. Pretty sure the old Makita 18v cordless won't be enough.

Re: CL Score!

At least around here, you have to have a title to haul it to a salvage yard. If you don't have one, you can cut it into 4 pieces with a cut down the center and one across. They must be 4 separate pieces or they'll send you home to torch it some more. I bought a truck for $400 not long ago just for the 4L80E, no title. After I spent an afternoon cutting that SOB up, I decided I'm not going to get anything without a title from now on!
Free score with a tranny and engine, though, I believe I'd be hauling that sucker home, too!
