new truck opinions needed thanks

hello, im normally on the 67-72 forum however i have need of a newer truck question.
i am looking to be buying a new truck in the future at some point. so i am wondering who has a gmc canyon with the 2.9L and 5spd, or a gmc 1500 4.8L. and how you guys like the trucks, and whether your real world mileage was the same as the EPA estimates. or any other thoughts on these trucks thank you everyone.

I guess I have a bit of experince with both of threse trucks. My Dad uses a Canyon (2 wheel drive/ext cab) as a back-up truck at work. It's got the 2.9 and the 5 speed, but he kind of regrets going with the 4 cylinder.. The salesman said he wouldn't like it without the bigger motor, but my Uncle didn't think it'd make much of a difference. I can't really comment on the gas mileage of it, but it carries a full load everyday it's used. I drive a 2010 Silverado (Reg cab, short bed, 4x4, with the 4.8) and love it. I had a 99 with the same options before this one, and it's a huge difference in ride. Right now I get about 17MPG, but thats all around town driving (it might have gone on the interstate twice now?). There's a few small things that bug me on it, but so far no real complaints. I see your in NH too... I'm guessing you'd want a 4x4? When I was shopping for a new truck I thought about a Colorado/Canyon, but honestly they're almost the same money, and you get alot more with the fullsize.

i agree they end up being so close in price the only reason id go 2.9L 5 spd canyon is i love the feeling of shifting gears, if i can't get manual i'm just gonna upgrade to 1500,cuz if i need to go auto and bigger motor might as well get the truck to go with it.
i might go 2WD as i'm stubborn as hell and have always been able to survive with 2wd. i even offroad many trails in my 72 gmc c25, gotta love faces of my friends after i pull them out after they get stuck w/4wd that being said i understand 2WD has limits... so guess it depends what i decide when i finally go buy.
17mpg is pretty good to especially all around town! thanks

Probably the best way is to just go to a dealership and see what they have... They can look up prices of every truck around, and see how much of a difference there is. While your there be sure to test drive both. The salesman I had kept trying to get me to test drive a new one, but I already had my mind made up about what I wanted, so I never did before I bought it (just figured it rode like my 99), but boy what a difference. Even my boss who's Ford all the way say it rode amazing.

2WD is definately doable... Especially because of how light they are. But if you ever want to add a plow in the future, or ever have to tow something in the winter, it leaves you kind of regretting it.. Not to mention better resale.

You could always just use your 72 as a summer Daily Driver too

thats the plan leave 72 as cruiser instead of one of 2 current daily drivers, stupid dakota being 2nd dd and coincidentally the one being replaced.
between the locker and HD snow tires i use winters not bad, boss lets me use plow truck after storms, so no plow needed. and most my towing would be done between storms when roads are good, so...i feel im good
i just wanted some real world opinions as they are trying to sell trucks, and try their best to hype them up. many times ive seen buddies get cars/trucks that don't meet the expected expectations, or just give them problems that are actually common place that they never tell you about.
case in point apparently 00-05 f150 with plows are common for front lug nuts snapping off, dealer never told my buddy, mechanic told him when they towed it in, cost him 6k when the trucks tires flew off and smashed the whole front end into the ground. they claimed owner neglect and warranty didn't cover it. he had bought it new.

Wow that's crazy! They were still 5 lug wheels then weren't they? I'm guessing he won't be getting a Ford next time? Hahaha

Honestly so far here are my complaints with my Silverado: the knob to change the radio is in kind of an awkward sport (ended up getting Sirius radio though), the seats don't tilt all the way forward (to get to things behind the seat, but it rolls forward far enough to not really matter), and that the pickup bed is kinda high. I know a contractor who has an 09 and uses 2 or 3 tanks of gas a week in his, and agreed that they were his only complaints.

I'd like to keep the Silverado mainly for winter, and run an old Chevy 2WD next summer. This summer I kept my new truck mostly parked, but drove an 84 Chevy K30, which was probably less economical, haha

yeah had something to do with the way the rim set on the lugnuts with weight acted like a knife, think they were certian rims. i don't like the radios either and would agree the bed seems high but minor trade offs i guess.
