Engine dead
I figured this was coming. It's never a good sign when you take the lid off the air cleaner housing and find it has no filter element in it. I bought my '70 K10 in March and knew then the engine would have to be replaced. I drove it all summer and now it seems to have spun a bearing or something else catastrophic. We don't need to diagnose, there have been plenty of warning signs.
Anyway, this time I think I want to do something different and actually properly rebuild an engine for my truck. I still have the 4 bolt 350 I pulled from my '72 K10 several years ago. Firgure I can take it in and get it bored and whatever else it needs. The heads were horrible, I have some good 441 heads I may take in and have cleaned up, figure with the right amount of dish they would work well. My question is this: what are "typical" shop rates for machine work? I know this can probably vary widely by region, etc. But if you have had machine work done recently, just throw it out there. Like many people, the last couple years haven't been kind to me financially. I want work done right, but I don't want to overpay. I'd also appreciate recommendations on shops in my area. Lexington and Louisville KY, Cincinnati and Dayton OH, Indianapolis. Thanks in advance. |

Re: Engine dead
A little north of Indy is McGunnegil, they specialize in circle track engines. My uncle just had his 327 block decked, punched .30, crank polished or ground (cant remember which), cam bearings installed, etc. His bill was $600.
