SM 465 PTO info? Interchangeability?
I have a sm465 out of a 70-71 Chevy that is mated to a 205. The 465 has a PTO on it that I would like to possibly use later. I wanted to know if the anyone here knew if the PTO could be used on other transmissions and or transfer cases? I don't have the trans/case combo here at the moment to compare which is why I'm asking. Would the PTO fit the 205 or other transmissions? I'm trying to put together a low budget winch from parts that I have available. Ultimately I would like to run an overdrive transmission with a PTO winch. I have on hand a th350/np205, aSM465/np205 (with the PTO), a TH 400 and divorced T221 and a NP201 (also divorced). Thanks for any help here, I appreciate it.

Re: SM 465 PTO info? Interchangeability?
I don't know a lot about it, but yes, I think there is a LOT of PTO interchangeability between trans and t-case and even Ford/Dodge/Chevy. I know the cover for the PTO on my NP205 has the same bolt pattery as the PTO cover on my SM465.

Re: SM 465 PTO info? Interchangeability?
That was something that I noticed too. I just didn't know about how the gears might mesh inside. I do know that the PTO came with a huge Chelsea winch that I'm thinking about putting in. Not sure if I could hide it anywhere though. Thanks for the info.

While the pattern may be the same, PTOs are very specific. Just because the mounting pattern is the same does NOT mean the guts are.

Re: SM 465 PTO info? Interchangeability?
I guess I should just go pick it up. It's 3 hours away and I was trying to figure this out before I went there to get it. Any other responses? I'd like to hear 'em. Thanks, Chris

Re: SM 465 PTO info? Interchangeability?
Besides gear mesh and bolt pattern mesh - you need to consider application too.
Some PTOs are meant to drive winchs, some hydraulic pumps, some water pumps, etc.... the gearing inside them, as well as where they mount (tranny vs. tcase) are very specific. (output RPM difference) For example - the SM465 PTO has to be "in gear" for the PTO to operate. Thats good and all as long as you can shift your tcase into neutral when the application requries it. On the flip side, having to have the tranny in gear to run a pump (water / hydraulic) wouldn't always be ideal. Then to take it one step further - a PTO on your tcase would be worthless without the tranny in gear. Again, does the specific application you're currently in work with this scenario? You won't really know until you're there. As far as winches go, electric is a whole lot easier to dear with, because all of the above don't apply. (you can also mount some pumps off the engine drive pullies, again eleminating the complications above)

Re: SM 465 PTO info? Interchangeability?
I was kinda looking at a PTO driven hydraulic setup. I've got an electric and while it works alright, I like the idea of being able to run an electric rear winch and a hydraulic or mechanical front. I kinda like going overkill and then some. I do see how a transfercase mounted PTO could be problematic in a few situations though. Thanks for that angle on this. I really liked the Milemarker setup that runs off the P.S. pump, but I've got an Warn 8274 and a big Chelsea 9-10K# in the garage. Plus it seems like M.M. isn't pushing their hyd. winches as much as the elec. ones anymore.
