Smile Father's day project #1 - BB is in

Here are a few pics of the 402 installed (finallly!). To quote the Dead, "what a long strange trip it's been". It is in my oldest son's 71 2wd SWB stepside.

Here's the short version of the saga:

This engine was originally installed spring 2001. It threw a rod in Oct 2001 and sat in my barn until spring 2002. At that time, I had aquired another BB truck and gave that truck's engine to my son to replace the original. My son was working at NAPA at the time and worked a deal with the machinist, the machinist world do all work on the replacement engine's rebuild for free in exchange for the blown 402 short block.

As work progressed on the replacement block, it was desicovered to be cracked and not usable. The machinist was nice enough to retunr the blown block, but the "free" labor deal was no longer valid. It's now late-summer 2002, 2 engines torn down and no real progress.

Fall 2002, my son leaves NAPA to go to school and the machinist is side-lined by triple by-pass surgery. Things are looking bleak at the moment.

Early spring 2003, Dad steps in and contact's NAPA about engine. I'm told the cost is now over 3K and that machinist will be back to work on it. BUT, they want some cash before proceeding. Okay, so I write a check for 2000 and tell them I want it done by May 31.

May 31, 2003. Engine is done. Hand #1 son a check for balance due (remember he's in school, no steady job) and he and 2 buddies go get engine. While unloading engine, it drops and crushed the 7 qt oil pan. Fortunately, no other damage done anf nobody hurt (about the only good thing to happen since the start of this debacle) and we get another oil pan and install.

13 hours later (part of saturday and all of father's day) here is where we are at. Engine builder comes over today at 3:30 PM to prep and start engine. Of course, I'll be at work for the big moment!

Anyway, this is how I spent father's day 2003!
