Re: chey 427 tall deck?
the 366 & 427 truck engine blocks were 1/2" taller so they could use a taller piston to get an extra ring on them. it will work but regular intakes won't fit because the heads are too far apart. i have been told in the past that special intakes have been made just for this swap but i haven't seen one. i had a bud who made spacers for one a long time ago to get a single plane intake on his dump truck so i know it can be done.

Re: chey 427 tall deck?
don't know for sure, but i would say no. it would be a waste of iron for gm to make that deck thick enough to be able to do that.

Re: chey 427 tall deck?
Firts off, what is your intended useage of your truck with this engine?
The tall deck truck engines in stock form aren't a very good base for any kind of performance useage. They are good for low to mid range torque, with small port, small valve heads. And no, you cannot mill the deck down to a standard height. There are aftermarket as well as GMPP intakes for tall decks, but I believe they are most if not all single plane. Not the style of choice for a low rpm engine. The distributor is also specific to the tall deck engine. With that said, the tall deck block itself can be built to quite the performance engine. The GMPP 572 big block crate engine is built with a tall deck block. But an engine like this isn't something a first time builder would want to tackle. I'm thnking you'l be stuck with building this engine with stock style tall deck pistons and rods. Then you will need to find a set of heads with the right size combustion chamber to get your compression where you want it. And of course the correct cam to go with the whole combination.

Re: chey 427 tall deck?
Like said above what do you want to do with this engine. If you want it stock I wouldn't waste your time but if your doin a build up on this then its worth it. I'm building one for my project and its going to be. 505 stroker. The bore and stroke on these is. 3.250 bore 3.76 stroke and have forged crank factory and usually have the heavyduty dot rods. The deck is .400 thou taller than a standard deck engine and there are many combos you can run. Most of the aftermarket intakes for these allow you to use a standard distributer but are open plenum and are for big breathing heads not the peanut little stock head found on these engines.

Re: chey 427 tall deck?
i was thinking like a mild build, bored 60 over and edelbrock pro flowx2 fi with a 268 cam, long tube headers but the goal is 1800-5500 power range, mainly daily driver and weekend warrior

Re: chey 427 tall deck?
The thing with these motors having the taller deck height is the exhaust is different aswell so header selection might be limited. If this is all your doing for a build i would personally find a cheap 454 and do that up for the price of building it it would be the same or cheaper and yeild you more power i would think. The rotating assemblies r heavy and slow reving in these unless you put standard pistons in then you need either new rods or a crank to make up the difference and the costs go up from there. If your really want ot do something with it buy a 4.25stroke crank bore it .060thou to 4.310 bore then put in a set of 6.8" rods and pistons with a pin height of 1.27 an d you will have 496. The cast cranks off ebay r cheap and rods arnt bad either. the piston r off the shelf. Just an idea
