driveshaft?
I have a 82 GMC with a 454 and a longshaft th350. The trans is going out. I have a fresh th350 laying in the corner of the shop, the problem is it is a short tailshaft. Has anyone run into this ? Do you know of any thing that would have an 8 inch[I think that is the difference between the long and short]longer driveshaft? Please help! thanks Jim

Re: driveshaft?

Re: driveshaft?
Been there done that. Have an 84 that had a long tail(9 inch0 tailshaft) and got a th350 short tail(6 inch tailshaft) that's what is in it now. They did have a 12 inch tail th350 though, but for a short tail you can get a longer driveshaft, for the short bed or long bed whatever you have, a long 9 inch tail trans a 700r4 driveshaft will work, for a short tail 6 inch tail the 3 speed standard transmission, or any side shift linkage trans like saginaw 4 spd, muncie or whatever(not the sm465 tp loader) they are the same length as the short tail th350 so the drivehsaft works perfectly. We bought one from a local junkyard for $65 and it fit perfectly. We needed one exactly 3 inches longer and I had the measure wrote down, I can look them up for you, but I think we ended up needing a 60 or 61 inch shaft, I think ours was 55 and 1/2 from center of one u joint to the other and the one we got for the short tail was 58-1/2 or so center to center u joints. it's an easy fix and not bad if you can find a junkyard with one, or have one made at a driveshaft place.
