Retirement Shop Pics

Been a lot longer than I had wanted but the retirement "playhouse" is finally taking shape. The steel portion went up last fall and it took me this long to be able to enclose it. Long story there but it is finally closed in and can secure it. Working to putting in the barrel stove and then on to wiring. Several pics to load, here's the first batch.

Second batch. Framing in a round roof was a challange.

Couple more. Framed with 2x6, boxed with 7/16" osb, sided with James Hardie cement 4x8 and 12" lap siding. Vinyl windows up high for ventilation and light only. Did not want windows down low for nosy tresspassers. Live on a cul de sac road, house was broken into couple years ago with considerable loss. Paranoia will destroy ya' as they say.

Here is a few from the inside. 35 x 50, 16' 4" to center. Walls are 8' at 1' in from edge. 5" poured floor, lots of steel every 4' and mesh with 3,500 psi. rock mix. One 36" walk door at west end, twin 10' x 9' tall doors opposite each other for a drive thru, double barrel wood stove for heat as have no gas at that end of the property. 125 amp main service box for elec. Want the heat done first as winter is approaching.

I like it, looks like it would be challenging to frame as you said. hard to tell is the roof double wall and insulated? or single?

I am interested in how you are going to insulate it too. As well as finish out the inside, workbench, storage and the like.

I always liked that style of building. I could see building a second floor on one side for more storage. Maybe an office and a bathroom under it.

The roof is single wall steel, 22 gauge ribbed and corragated (sp), non-insulated. The end walls I plan on insulating as time and $$$ allow along with sheeting the inside with the 7/16" osb. Will most likely then seal and paint the sheeting to allow lighting "bounce-back" if that makes sense.

As for the steel walls, there is a "blanket" style insulation that can be installed but not sure about that aspect yet. Depends on how well the stove heat keeps the comfort level. I have LOTS of trees that always need trimming for burning in the stove. I do plan on enclosing an area to house my work bench & vise, tool boxes, drill press, grinder, parts washer, stereo & speakers and a 110 a/c in it for Kansas summer heat. Use the upper ceiling area for parts storage. Still lots to do but further along then I was.

Sounds like we are on the same wave length. I like the idea that I can, for the most part, put up a building like this with a little help from friends.

Allways been curious how the costs compare to that type of build compared to a pole barn or conventional frame shop? I'm hoping to get out of my neighborhood sometime in the near future (or distant?) and start on a shop too.

For anyone who is thinking of a building of this type, couple things to consider. It * * DOES NOT * * go up as easy as they say on the TV ads. We tried a couple rib sections, mind you this is 35' wide, and first couple rib sections did not go to bad. After that seemed as if just could not get the ribs up without them wanting to twist as we raised them. 6 men lifting. Finally decided to rent a LULL, (hydraulic lift with forks) and built a temporay frame work for them to rest on as we raised them using the forks and extending the boom. A little costly but much more effective. The building wasn't doing me any good just sitting on the ground in a pile.

Another point, with this building 35 x 50, there is just over 4,600 bolts to insert and tighten. On a hard rain I do have a couple small leaks or drips. Apparently a couple bolts were missed on tightening.

Over all I am happy with the building, not sure about cost this way vs. a pole barn style or wood framed. Concrete is also another big $$. We poured this using footings/ stem wall/ floor 5" thick) monolithic style in two pours with LOTS of steel. For a building this size I just don't think it can be done in any style for under 25 $$ large. Haven't added it all together yet, guess I don't really want to either, LOL.

Not bad price for a 35x50, I built a couple large ones, and they were well over 50, but that was complete.

A pole barn is the cheapest way to go by far, just not quite the same as a full framed structure, but when everthing is covered up, no ones knows what it is.

Shop is not completly done as of yet. Just yesterday finished installing the wood burning stove, need to have it "blessed" by local building inspector before I "fire" it off. As for the cost total, have not put pencil to paper yet but rough estimate figure about $25 large. Still have the electrical wiring to go yet.

Also need to figure in a replacement walk-in door as the one that has been installed for just over a month was trashed by who ever broke in and stole some tools I had been using and were laying on the work bench. Lost a DeWalt cordless drill, charger, two batteries, case and several assorted bits. A corded Black & Decker sawzall, metal case and several brand new blades plus the wrenches for changing them. And a Craftsman two drawer tool box filled with wrenches, sockets, pliers, side cutters, screw drivers, etc. Second time I've been broken into in just about 2 years and 8 months. Damn it !!

It may be a wise investment to get an alarm with a motion sensor and camaras, not to mention a few rabid dogs too!

You have been busy Gary. Sorry to hear about your second run-in with thieves. I am getting fed up with all the stealing going on in this economy. Hope the future is brighter down the road for ya and us all. Trevor
