Power stearing and Disc Breaks upgrade

Hello everyone, I was thinking about the different things I want to do to my 1970 Chevy in the next couple of months, and I thought Power Stearing and Disc Breaks was a good place to start (after my other plans, tearing out the motor to reseal the engine and clean the engine bay), I am just curious I have heard so many different price ranges on the cost to do both these options, so what do you think:

-Where is the best place to get the parts for my power stearing, I want to do this on a budget, so should I go used or new? How much should I be looking at paying just for the parts(new/used)? I will be doing the work myself.

-Where is the best place to get the parts for my power disc break, I want to do this also on a budget, so should I go used or new? How much should I be looking at paying just for the parts(new/used)? I will be doing the work myself.

Please give me your advise, I want the truck done right, I am on a budget, but I also don't want to have to re-do the job in another couple of years.

I really appreciate your input.

Thanks,

Re: Power stearing and Disc Breaks upgrade

I picked up a 72 chevy front disc setup at the junk yard for $150
But early 70s to mid 80s will work!
Power steering pump and box from an 81 C10 for $40
Power brakes booster came out of a van I was scrapping
And I'm making the adapter bracket. But there is a
guy on this site who makes them (Captainfab)
http://www.67-72chevytrucks.com/vboa...d.php?t=347484
Rear impala discs $100
Rear camaro calibers $50 on ebay
5 lug axles from Summit $220
And I'll make the adapter plates myself,
But Captainfab makes those as well.

Keep in mind, I'm going from
6 lug to 5 lug,
Drums to 4 wheel disc brakes
Plus new ball joints and tie rod ends.

Re: Power stearing and Disc Breaks upgrade

Thanks Spike, I appreciate the feed back, it sounds like the junk yard is a good place to start, I know I will be having some more questions when I start the upgrades, but I just wanted a good idea of the cost.

Thanks,

Re: Power stearing and Disc Breaks upgrade

Get a complete crossmember with the steering and suspension from a 73-87 truck or suburban. After like 81 the steering is a varible rate box. It will be the perfect time while you have your engine out to reseal. the crossmember will bolt in. Jim
