68 swap to a 77 4x4 chasis
Hey, I've got a '68 C10 that I've been thinking about making 4wd. I have the oppurtunity to buy a '77 short bed 4x4 complete rolling chasis minus engine for a couple hundred. How hard is it to swap my '68 to the newer frame? Ps, just got into this chevy truck craze a couple months ago so I don't know much about them at all. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks to all.

Re: 68 swap to a 77 4x4 chasis
The cab will need a couple inches of lift because the 73-87 frames rise up that much more under the bed.The side tanks won't fit. You'll need to move/alter the core support mounts or devise you're own cushions and just drill through the frame inside of factory location on core support. The front frame rails will be long requiring some work to fit the 67-72 bumper. It's really not very hard to make it work.

Re: 68 swap to a 77 4x4 chasis
Thanks, second question- Would it be easier (if possible) to bolt the 77 drivetrain to my 68 frame? Ie, axles, tranny and transfer case?

subscribing to this one.
My son is tarting a 68 3/4 ton GMC and would also like to make it 4wd. No donor truck yet so I'm interested to see the feedback on this topic. |

I can't say for certain but I think it would be easier to just bolt up the new axles under the older truck. I think you just have to drill one hole in the frame for everything? Again I am not certain but I think that is the case.

Re: 68 swap to a 77 4x4 chasis
So im not sure if my way is the right way BUT i have a 68 K-10 and i wanted some upgrades so I installed 84 axles the front is a bolt in the rear is cut/grind off perches and shock brackets weld on new perches and shock brackets and bolt in not too much work for a huge gain with braking and steering

Re: 68 swap to a 77 4x4 chasis
Is the '68 a 4wd?It would be super easy to swap drivetrain.I assumed it was a 2wd.If it is 2wd you need the crossmembers and if the rear is coil the spring perches from the 4wd will need installed.

I'd say his 68 is 2wd. Good luck with your project, I've started a similar build (link in my signature) if you want to check it out.
