Re: starting problem?????
I say loose connection. Start on the battery terminals, clean them good with a wire brush. After that check the cables going to the starter as well as ground cables.

Re: starting problem?????
If it's only doing it right after you shut it off, could be the solenoid getting hot.

Re: starting problem?????
In my experience, the following were replaced when I experienced this problem:
ignition switch neutral switch stater/solenoid What it needed: upper steering column rebuild. Very expensive guessing on the part of many "highly qualified" mechanics. |

Ignition switch- Sends a signal to a Relay that will power your starter, Its just a switch so as long as its sending power to the relay the switch is working (as long as you hear clicking). Neutral switch- That should just complete the electric circuit needed to send power to your starter, once again if you hear clicking that means it is functioning and the starter is getting power. Starter solenoid- I was under the impression when this did not work it would just kick over the starter motor without engaging the flywheel, making a zinging sound. 9 out of 10 electrical problems seem to be a bad ground. Thats exactly where I would start, making sure all your cables have good connections. All the cables. |

Re: starting problem?????
I spent 33 years working for Chevy dealers all over upstate NY. This may really sound "backyard", but in the interest of speed, this is the way alot of us checked this problem. First we checked the B+ circut, then B-. Next, hook a test light to the purple wire at the starter and turn the key to start. If it lit, solinoid feed circut was good. If it didn't, backtrack up to the ign switch testing at each switch in that circut. Next (and this is the backyard part) have a buddy sit in the truck (or car) and hold the key to the start position, while he is doing that, give the starter a good whack with a hammer. LOL If this works, and it usually does, rebuild\replace the starter. jim

Re: starting problem?????
My old Z28 used to do that at the worst possible times! turned out to be a bad fusible link on one of the starter wires.

Re: starting problem?????
I had that prob. on my 72. Would only do it when it was warm all my wires cables looked and tested good. Then one day after running around town and it was really warm I popped the hood and the neg battery cable was SMOKING it looked fine, but when I took it off it fell apart.

Re: starting problem?????
My Blazer used to do the exact same thing. Look at the wires on the junction block on the firewall. Make sure they are clean. Mine would start right away with only a wiggle of the wires that attach at the junction block. I never did fix that before I sold the truck.
