Cardboard glove box?

Does any body know of a better option than the silly cardboard box that Chevy used for a glove box. I had to get behind the glove box and the aged '69 cardboard just about fell apart in my hands. I am looking for an aftermarket fiberglas or S.S. one that looks better and is a bit easier to remove.

Re: Cardboard glove box?

I don't know of any better replacements, BUT I am quite impressed with the new cardboard box I have. It's actually very rigid and will hold a lot of weight and stand a lot of water.

My windshield went through a leaking phase for a couple months resulting in puddles of water on the floor and in the new glove box. Didn't do a thing to it.

Re: Cardboard glove box?

I have seen some plastic glovebox liners at one vendor or the other. Don't remember exactly who. I also saw a thread on here a few years back about some guy who had fabbed his own from sheet aluminum. It looked OK and a lot more secure than the card board. Anbody with 5 minutes outside your line-of-sight could reach under your dash and slash the cardboard like a pinyata with all your goodies falling to the cab floor.

Re: Cardboard glove box?

i think the problem comes when you try to get a rigid material inside the dash,. It has to give a bit.

Re: Cardboard glove box?

If you want to stiffen up the cardboard scuff it up and put a coat of fiberglass resin on it, you want the resin to soak in and not lay on top.

Re: Cardboard glove box?

mine was replaced with a plastic one that came from vintage air. it is designed to allow for the hvac unit to go under the dash in behind the glove box. the diff is it is a shollow box only approx 1/3 as deep. but it is plastic, and i only keep small items in it anyway

Re: Cardboard glove box?

i built one out of aluminum, wasnt hard, just a little challenging because i didnt have one before so i wasnt real sure all the sizes but u got it made and in the dash, the next thing is to put some felt or some sort of a liner to keep the rattle down.

Re: Cardboard glove box?

I don't see why you couldn't build one out of some roof flashing, it's just real thin aluminum. Pop rivet it together and spray some undercoating on it to cut down on rattling. I'm sure the size couldn't be the same as an original but it should still be fairly flexiable to still be able to get it in.

Sounds like to me the original cardboard did it's job well for years, so i vote for and myself will use the "silly cardboard" lol, and if you need security, then either a pistol or pit bull

Re: Cardboard glove box?

I agree that the cardboard did it's job well and was in excelent shape before I tried to take it out. Of course the P.O. only had his wifes emory boards, a note pad and a small box of fuses. I would like to find something a little more sturdy so when I need to remove it again I am not thrashing it all over again.

Re: Cardboard glove box?

I put the Vintage Air glove box in my truck. But I had to cut it in half horizontally. I threw the top half away.

Re: Cardboard glove box?

i was going to have a stainless one made up, but i dont know how you would get it in place through the glove box opening and i dont want to remove everything under the dash to install a glove box, so i put in a new cardboard one

Neighbor of mine did that with his '69, said it worked excellent.

Re: Cardboard glove box?

I think the trick to building one out of sheet metal is to make it so it can expand on hinges or rivet/pivots once it gets thru the hole.
