Steering pump bracket?

My '73 K20 squeels when I turn the wheels to full lock, obviously the belt isn't tight. Upon closer inspection, is the belt the ONLY thing holding my PS pump in place?!

I see three major bolt holes on the PS pump. Compared to the one in my '79 (both 350s) the top hole behind the filler cap bolts to the head, and the adjustment on the far right bolts to the exhaust manifold. This truck doesn't appear to have a bolt hole in the head and has a set of headers. What is missing here? Is there anything holding my pump on besides the belt?

The third hole, on the bottom left, isn't bolted down in my '79 either.

You can set my truck on fire and roll it down a hill,
and I still wouldn't trade it for a Coupe de Ville.

Re: Steering pump bracket?

can you grab the pump and move it? If not something must be holding it, which I think there must be something anyways the belt would let it go all the way into the crank if that was all basically. Our 84 has one that goes into the water pump, and then one that goes through the slot bracket, I'd guess into the manifold bracket, the other part bolts up into the block.

Your heads definately do not look like they have bolt holes in them for it. The manifold part would be easy enough just use a spacer and longer bolt or stud to hold the bracket on, if you had that part. My old man used a piece off an exhaust hanger the flat type with holes, bolted to the adjuster then the head to mount one. I'll see if I can find pics of either setup. Looks like your lines for it are leaking too. You should be able to bolt the one to the water pump, might have to line it up though.

here's the one he cut an exhaust hanger for..

this one looks alot like yours but the top bracket that bolts to the head is gone, and the manifold part is made on the same bracket I guess, this is dad's 84..

I can get better pics of either if needed.

Re: Steering pump bracket?

My '73 originally came with a 454. By the time I got it someone had already dropped in a 350, but they fabbed up the originaly brackets to fit. Well, a couple of weeks ago that bracket gave out. I went to the junkyard and got a complete pump and bracket setup for $20 out of a late 70's van with an SBC. It mounts to the lower two bolts on the block (the ones used for older style front motor mounts). The bracket has the slot adjustment right on it. It was a very easy installation...

Re: Steering pump bracket?

You're missing the bracket that doesn't fit when one puts headers on. Header manufacturers sell a replacement bracket:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HED-20120/

or

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HOK-10961HKR/

My '73 K20 with 350 has that third bracket (I still have manifolds) that bolts to that first bolt on the manifold where your header has the ground strap. Here is a photo of it. There are a few different brackets for PS units and mine is a little different from yours, but that bracket serves the same purpose.

Re: Steering pump bracket?

Alright, thanks for the info everyone! I'll try and fab up some kind of bracket around the header area.
