My "new" 86 K2500 has suffered a near disaster.

The 86 K2500 I bought last week, I bought it knowing it had a dead miss...but it ran and the guy drove it to my house, but it ran like crap.

So I started to investigate, the other day. found that #3 plug was always soaked and never got warm when the engine ran, and I was getting tons of reverb out the carb hen I brought it off idle.

So I pulled the valve cover and found a surprise...The #3 intake spring had shattered and 2 full turns were sitting on top of the head. Looks like they drove it this way for a very long time, somehow.

Obviously, Im pulling the heads off now, for more reasons that one. The intake is packed with carbon, thick oily deposits...this will be replaced with an edelbrock performer RPM aluminum intake. The Q-jet was also heavily deposited, it's varnished, and the secodnary pull off thing is messed up..Im seriously thinking about just putting on a Holley 4V...and just going that way, but its undecided as of now.

I detect damage to the #3 intake lifter and Im about positive I feel some damage to the lobe...and I convieniently have a new in box Lunati VooDoo 60101LK sitting next to me...so Im gonna slide in a new bumpstick.

Also replacing the timing set...I dont like the plastic gear..

The heads are going to the machine shop, new valves as needed, shave as needed, redo all valves and guides, install new guide seals, and install new valve springs. Ive got a set of roller tipped 1.6 rockers coming for it.

The exhaust is shot to hell, Im doing the 290 dollar full exhaust from summit with LT headers.

Im deleting all the emissions crap..not a single peice is intact as it is.

Replacing every inch of vac line, and plugging the "ported vacuum" ports.

new water pump and timing cover, new valve covers

Edelbrock 14" air filter

Should run well. What's troubling is I removed the carb this morning and there is no kickdown cable for the TH350 some genius transplanted in this tthing...

Also, some genius ran a vac line from the manifold to the EGR valve...effectively pinning it wide open.

All new head bolts, valve cover bolts, breather setup, and intake hardware...

I should have some pics of the engine progress tomorrow...

Re: My "new" 86 K2500 has suffered a near disaster.

Got the head off. one piston is beat up, alot of cylinder wear on 2 cylinders, likely due to the incomplete combustion from damaged plug wires (fuel washed the oil off the cylinders)...

So next weekend the engine is coming out...Ill have it punched 60 over. New rotating assembly/have the crank turned. New main and rod bearings, seals, etc..

Really didnt want to have to do this...but oh well, will be a better truck as a result.

Re: My "new" 86 K2500 has suffered a near disaster.

Ill be pulling the engine next weekend, at which time Ill be able to accurately confirm it is indeed a 350 and not a 305, and rather or not it is a 1pc rear main or a 2pc.

At which time Ill be able to order the 383 Stroker kit for it...

If you have the head off, it's easy to confirm engine size. A 350 has a 4" bore, and teh 305 is substantially smaller (don't remember the size exactly, but a good bit smaller). They share the 3.48" stroke.
