50 Cab ID Tag in Door Jam
Can someone post a picture of what the vin plate in the drivers door frame looks like in a 1950 Chevy 3100? Want to see exactly what one looks like.
Also, is it correct that back in 50, the vehicles were titled with the engine ID number, not the vehicle? Thanks! |

Re: 50 Cab ID Tag in Door Jam
Ah, back then some states titled the truck by the engine serial number. Some states by the vin tag. Which was not very much info.
I ran into this when buying a 49 GMC panel off of Ebay. It was in Florida. Florida titled them by the engine serial number. Lucky for me it still had the original engine in it. The vin tag was just screw on to the door jamb on these trucks. Try the www.jalopyjournal.com Or the www.hamb.com More info there than here on these. Lots of guys here visit that site.

This is the case with my 55 first series truck. What am I supposed to do when I swap the engine? There is a tag on the jamb now, but the numbers on it have nothing to do with the number on the title or engine, and someone used sheetmetal screws to attach it... I bought a blank tag and am considering stamping the VIN on it and installing it with rivets. Last edited by WIDESIDE72; 11-12-2010 at 10:15 PM. |

My 48 came with an "engine change" title from Texas that the p/o had gone to the trouble to have done. That saved my bacon when I moved back to Washington and had to have the truck inspected here. If I still had the original block from the truck and a title with that block number on it I would hang on to that block for as long as it took to get the truck done and get an engine change designation on the title. Back to the original question. several vendors have duplicate door post tags but they are blank. One example here: http://www.classicparts.com/1950-Doo...ctinfo/33-012/ Each tag has the gross weight listed and a space to stamp the body (serial) number. That still won't do a lot of good if you don't have a title or don't have a damaged tag like mine to get the number off. I'd say that no tag is better than a bogus tag. Back in the 70's no one gave it much thought when they took the tag off when they were painting the truck and quite often they got lost in the process. Re: 50 Cab ID Tag in Door Jam
Note that the number that Mr48 put up differs by truck year. I think 47-49, 50-51, 52-3, and 54-5 so you need to match your year with the tag you are after! I just looked this up last night. A buddy is doing a '47 and had to get 33-011 according to the ratted old catalog I had.
Some were screwed, some riveted. They have rivets available as well. |

Re: 50 Cab ID Tag in Door Jam
Here's a shot of my new-old tag that I riveted on.
I had one of those dog tag/bracelet engraving places in the mall do the lettering/numbers so it looks professional. I just used the serial number that came with the Ownership as my tag was not legible. Last edited by Atomsplitter; 11-15-2010 at 06:07 PM. |

Re: 50 Cab ID Tag in Door Jam
Cool, thats what mine looks like, except the PO sanded off all the stuff except the punched numbers because it has been painted over. Wish he would have left the paint on, bet some mild paint remover could havd taken the top stuff off.
Mine is titled under the engine number, but I would like to switch it over to the vehicle number. |

My Panel, 50 Chev, GMC and Bus has screws holding it in place. My 51 GMC and 54 Suburban has rivets.

Re: 50 Cab ID Tag in Door Jam
My Door jam plate is held on with 2 screws.
Is there a stamped number on the frame of the truck? If so, where is it and how do I find it? Is that number the same as the engine number or the door jam number or neither? Thanks! |

Re: 50 Cab ID Tag in Door Jam
Looks like the 57's have a frame number. Did they start doing it in 55 or something?
