Quadrajet Question
Hey everyone the baseplate on my stock qjet is warped and leaking. Does anyone make a replacement or do I need a new carb? And If I had to get a new carb I need a new intake too correct? Can anyone give me a part number or model of a bolt on deal that will give me comparable performance to my rochester? Thanks. If it matters the truck is bone stock 350/350 with 520,000 miles.

Re: Quadrajet Question
How about just finding a different baseplate?

Re: Quadrajet Question
If its something that is easliy swapped I would definatly like to keep this carb. Its kind of cool to have it all there as it was in 70'. I bought a nice rebuild kit online today but didnt see a baseplate. Would it be something I can find and put in realitivy simply? Thanks, sorry if they seem like basic questions.

Re: Quadrajet Question
There are un-warping tools for the q-jets that are available..also if you have a quad rebuilt, some offer that service as well. Like everything, I'm sure that option is not cheap.

Re: Quadrajet Question
Are you sure it's not the fuel bowl wells that are leaking. They're dead centre underneath and prone to leak. JB Weld fixes it.
I don't think I've ever seen or heard of a warped baseplate. |

Re: Quadrajet Question
On the bottom of the float bowl, there are two plugs beneath the bowls. Those plugs will leak. Guaranteed to leak, in fact.
NAPA has, or had, a kit that included two plugs with o-rings that seal against leaks. Also, carb kits include a couple of sponge-like pieces that fit into the bottom of the bowl and hold those plugs in-place to prevent leakage. You should be able to find a good steel straight-edge and know if the throttle plate is warped, or not.

Re: Quadrajet Question
Not trying to hijack, but I am also running an original Q-jet and was curious if you had any info or part numbers for the kit you ordered...

Here is the link and according to the web site they have 1 of each in the store closest to me. But of course that may change depending on where you're at. Not trying to hijack, but I am also running an original Q-jet and was curious if you had any info or part numbers for the kit you ordered... __________________ Derek Last edited by Cisco714; 11-18-2010 at 10:57 AM. Re: Quadrajet Question
Google "Cliff Ruggles" He's the Rochester man and can set you up with a very high quality rebuild kit. He also wrote the book on rebuilding and modifying Rochester carburetors for just about any application.

Re: Quadrajet Question
Modifying Q-Jets was the thing to do, "back in the day". The SS 396 Chevelles from '66, came with that carb. A good carb person could modify the way the secondaries opened (among other things) and someone else would be hard-pressed to know it had been done. It sure made those cars run waaaaaay better. Of course, there were other GM cars with that carburetor, but I also have to tell you that when they were new....there was some skepticism in the minds of those who didn't have one. It's the same with anything that is new and un-tried. But, we monitor and adjust. It's all good. I like my Q-Jet.

My recommendation is to read as much as you can about the quadrajet and check places on the net that give instruction on dismantiling and testing. Even Youtube has information on them. Here's a site you can check out. Scroll down and you will see the wells that geezer is talking about. http://www.carcraft.com/howto/57178/index.html |

Re: Quadrajet Question
In the process of rebuilding my q-jet now. I bought Cliff Ruggles book, got his rebuild (HP) kit and utilized his baseplate reconditioning/bushing install service. The carb is nearly ready for reinstall and tuuning. But to your question of warped base plate...I dont know if mine was warped or not, but I do know that Cliff reconditions both sides of it on a belt sander after removing both the primary and secondary throttle shafts and plates with assosiated linkages. I thought the service well worth the $45.
He also sells a plug/epoxy kit for $20. It requires drilling out and tapping these well plugs, and then screwing in new plugs with the epoxy. I bought this kit b4 I bought his book where he says to test them b4 replacing. Just take a soap and water mix, put it on the well plugs, and introduce compressed air into the cavities. Any leaks show up as a stream of bubbles. Turned out mine did not leak. I have a factory replacement Rochester 17054927 q-jet on my '72 C-10. It was manufactured in Dec. 1976, and he says it is quite rare to find leaking plugs in q-jets manufactured after 1975; very common on early q-jets. Air horns, on the other hand are almost always warped, I know mine is. He reconditions these in the same way after removing the brass tubes protrruding from the bottom of it. But he also says that q-jets can tolerate quite a bit of warping in this area and still function well. I'm just using the thicker of the two gaskets provided. While I'm not up and running yet, so far I'm pleased with the book, Cliff's service, and progress thus far. I just wish I had more time!!!! www.cliffshighperformance.com |
