Can I remove this can?
I have removed all the smog stuff from my truck, but have this one canister left.
I can see that the can (in the red cirkel) is still connected to one of the vacuum connections on my carb. What does it do and can I loose it and close the connection on the carb and remove the canister? i seems to have a line running to the bback of the car, that I havent traced completely to the back yet. ![]() Can I remove it and close the vacuum connection on the carb?

Re: Can I remove this can?
yes, the line that goes to the back goes to the fuel tank. just gas fume recirculation canister.

Re: Can I remove this can?
If I was taking out all the smog I probably would have taken that out first because I like working with my foot where the can goes
![]() Just make sure to plug that carb, runs pretty rough (if at all, depends on how decent everything else is running)

Re: Can I remove this can?
It all depends on how strict your smog laws are over there. If you have to go in for yearly inspections then I would say no. But if it is like it is here in Oklahoma rip it out. We don't have inspections.

Re: Can I remove this can?
Another way of looking at it is why remove it? It has zero impact on performance and reduces emissions so why take it out?

Re: Can I remove this can?
cleans it up underhood alot and makes it look better, not to mention it can mess up and not work. Or you'll need some new filter and have to buy it.
You need to leave the vent line going to it from the tank open or put on a breather/filter on the end of it or get a vented gas cap?

Re: Can I remove this can?
consider it done!
Would be nice to have a place to put my foot when doing stuff to the engine. I am 6,13foot (1,87m) but still it is hard to work the engine and I need a little stool to help me get to certain parts in the engine compartment. the car is getting spayed with Fluid-Film for corrosion prevention. They use salt in wintertime over here when frost is in the air and snow or ice is on the roads. Killer for old cars like our Burb... When its back, I'll take it out. thanks guys!

![]() Yeah its a handy spot to put a foot also. I just tossed the one out of my 86 the other day, and aimed the line downward. If I were to try and fix it proper like, and had a few dollars to blow, I would probably run the vent tube over to a small K&N style vent filter, and mount it hanging downward on the inside of the fender support bracing, to shield it from water, and tuck it away. The being said, Im having vent issues at the moment, but I'm sure it existed before I removed the canister, as I haven't plugged anything. Its not really a problem that's concerning me though, the fuel cap may not be vented. In all actuality, now that I'm thinking about it, I wonder why a person couldn't just plug the line up front, and run a vented cap. |

Re: Can I remove this can?
got another question that came up today.
What does this thing do in the red circle? It is not connected to anything at the moment...

Re: Can I remove this can?
Pretty much an old hot rodder myself, so I dont know all of the fancy names for junk I usually omit, but I'm pretty sure that's your EGR valve, you can take a quarter inch piece of flat steel, and using the removed component as a temple, and fabricate your own block off plate for it.
I'm pretty sure they sell them aftermarket, but I'm just used to making anything I can, I guess. |

Re: Can I remove this can?
yep that's egr, or exhaust gas recirculation valve. it dumps exhaust into the intake to reburn it and lower nox emissions, it can be removed and blocked off if you don't have emissions to pass. You definately can buy them from summit, jegs, advance, autozone etc. or make one, the block off plate that is.
As for plugging the vent line off and running a vented cap, nothing I heard you can do that and it work fine. Our 84 with the charcoal can had vent issues, the cap coming off would let air hiss out of the tank or cause the metal fap inside to flap back and forth, kinda like the truck was farting LOL. After removing the can and letting the line vent under the inner fender, still does it, but not as bad. We took it off, did the same on my 85 mcss since it was missing and my 88 now has it gone to. I do smell gas fumes from my 88 but the rest I don't.

Re: Can I remove this can?
kikkegek, if ya keep removing stuff, you might actually save a little mpg from not having to carry around that extra weight.
![]() benoit454, that exactly what mine is doing. If that vent line that ran to the canister was working as I thought it was supposed to, it shouldn't build up any pressure at all, kind of curious to whats going on there myself. I'd almost swear I get worse mpg if I let it build up for awhile, but that could all be in my head. Picked up another fuel cap that I had laying around here, its the plastic type like is in my truck, I thought I was going to switch it out to test, but the vent in this cap doesn't work well either, and its supposed to be a vented cap, takes a fair amount of pressure to get any air through it. Sorry to kind of wander off topic. |

Re: Can I remove this can?
same here, I've checked the line for bends and kinks and found nothing, I even tried to blow thru it from up front with the air compressor and it does barely, it's like it's an in tanke problem for us.
The egr should have ported vac. I'd guess and it can be checked with a hand vac. pump to see if it's working, if not it can cause rough idle or stalling, and not sure what it does if it's stuck shut I think maybe see a tad hotter temp and of course more nox, and maybe a tad bit of mpg difference(worse not sure). if it's stuck open it's a big vac. leak or maybe stuck shut too I forget.

Re: Can I remove this can?
thanks guys for all the answers.
I have read somewhere that the EGR valve helps in warming up the engine more quickly en in fuel efficiency? is this true? How does this EGR thing in the circle work? does it open up something that is underneath it? How should this whole thing be connected? should it in any way be connected to the valve in my exhaust? this one: ![]() In my other topic it is discussed in page 3 link to page 3

Re: Can I remove this can?
I set my vent line up with a fuel filter on the end of it and then positioned it up under the front fender. It vents and the filter keeps water and dirt out of the tanks. I removed mine years ago and the only thing that I have noted, is that sometimes there might be a little of a bit of pressure on the tank when I uncap it to fill it.
