Out with the Old, In with the New Old.
Replaced the original 307 in the Burb with a year correct 350. The 307 ran great, just wanted a little more zip. The 350 came in a parts truck and ran well. I put reconditioned 882 heads on it, summit cam & lifters, new double timing chain, new oil pump and felpro gaskets. The quadrajet is from a 72 chevy truck (I rebuilt it) and the performer I took off my new Blazer (put a stock quadrajet manifold back on that). I have under $300 in the changeover. I plasti-gauged a main and a beraing cap and they were in spec. It runs nice and sounds so much better than the 307 did.

I have been guilty of this same thing on more than one occasion. Buy a motor from a buddy, tear it down, clean it, blast a hone in the cylinders, throw some new rings, bearing and gaskets and a fresh set of heads and a cam, throw it in and put another hundred thousand or so on it. Most of them actually ran VERY well. Nice job!!

Thanks. No, I haven't checked mileage. I'm retired so I just drive it around Town mainly. I have only put about 100 miles on it since I completed the change last weekend. I have 3:07 rear gears so I use only 3rd (1:1) with a converter lockup around Town, as the OD is best left for highway use (60mph +).

I see you are running a 200 4r.
If you don't mind me asking how are you actuating the converter lockup? Who built the trans? Were any heavy duty parts included? Do you know what the trans came out of? How is it working for you? TIA

I bought a wiring kit from BowTie Overdrives which locks it up when in OD. I also bought an accessory to their kit which allows me to manually lock it up in 2nd or 3rd (drive). I bought the transmission used from a guy who had put it in his Monte. He had had it rebuilt by a local shop. It was not a Monte SS trans as it came out of an 84 Olds by tag code. The Monte SS and BGN transmissions have a better valve body that will allow it to shift at 5000 rpms when run automatically. The ones like mine will shift at 3000 rpms when in auto mode. I don't think it had anything special put in it, at least what I could see when I dropped the pan to install the wiring kit and change the filter. I put it in last winter and fabbed up a TV cable bracket. Bought a pressure guage and checked pressures in all gears at idle and at 1500 rpms and all were good. However, even though the cable appeared to be adjusted correctly, I didn't like the way it shifted, especially the 1-2 and 2-3 shifts (stacked under light throttle and sloppy under hard throttle. In any event, I pulled the 307 2 barrel out this fall and put the 350 in with a quadrajet, believing that I would have to have the tranny rebuilt. The difference in shifting is like night and day. I am still using my same bracket so I can only assume that the throttle swing (arc) of the quadrajet, which was the carb it was originally designed to be mated with, made the difference. If you go with an edelbrock speadbore or a Holley, I would recommend that you get the kit that corrects the throttle plate linkage for correct distance of pull and arc of swing so that it simulates the quadrajet. So long story short, it is working very well now and I think I'll leave it alone. I have 3.07 gears so I use drive around town and the OD only on the highway. I took only one highway trip of any length and I was running about 1700 rpms per my garmin at 66 mph if I recall correctly. I have 235/70/15 tires. Ideal gearing would be 3.73 probably, but I don't mind using it in drive around town.

sounds like you have it sorted out glad it is working for you. I have thought about one for my '94 burb but don't really have the time. i have a couple of AA code cadillac cores and a brf gn core but work has been brutal lately and i have been taking all the overtime they are offering after being out of work ten weeks last year. thanks again!
