Need a new radiator

Need a new 4 row radiator for my '69 GMC 350 auto no a/c. Thanks very much for any suggestions. And are the O'reilly radiators any good?

Re: Need a new radiator

I'm finding out Tuesday. Ordered a new 4 core O'Reilly's yesterday. Was thinking about repairing it, but then dropped a ratchet and added a new hole in it. Funny thing is, the 4 cores are $20 cheaper than the 3 cores.

Re: Need a new radiator

I bought a 4 core from Advance Auto a few weeks ago. I think the brand was Ready Rad. It looked good and seems to be working well. I switched from a 3 core to a 4 core so I had to do a little more work but I think it will be worth it.

Re: Need a new radiator

Just beware that O reilly sells two levels of 4 core radiators. They tried to sell me the one they commonly stock but it had plastic tanks. I made them order me one with proper copper/ brass construction. It was an extra 40 bucks or so and took 1 day to get from their warehouse.

Re: Need a new radiator

The one I got from Advance Auto looked just like the one eightbanger posted, I ordered it on their website while they had a sale going on. I don't think I would want one with the plastic tanks.

What size are the upper and lower inlet/outlets? I've got two used rads and they all have really small hose fittings. My 283 has an almost 2" lower rad hose.

Thanks

Re: Need a new radiator

Here Advance was the same price, neither had it in stock. The O'Reilly warehouse is the same distance from my house as the store is I shop at. And O'Reilly didn't make me pay first to order it.

Re: Need a new radiator

Not sure if you are looking for a driver or resto but I have one I just pulled out of my truck I don't need. I would let you have it for $40 if you need a driver. It's not pretty but it appeared to be working when I pulled it two weeks ago. I am down the road from you in Highland Village if interested.

Yup got one in my sons 72 C20, seems to work well, but there is no trans cooler, or heater hose fitting.

Re: Need a new radiator

I've got a SB400, over heating is a common issue. Whats the best RAD for my application?

I've got a shroud and flex fan, but I want a REALLY good rad to keep things in order.

Any advice?

Re: Need a new radiator

I have 3 sbc 400 in trucks, they do not have overheating problems. If you have heating problems then you have problems that even a 350 would overheat. Depending on the rpm of your heating problems, it could be the flex fan. At the rpm where they flatten out they tend to be like a peice of plywood, acualy blocking the airflow through the rad.

Re: Need a new radiator

It doesn't over heat, but when i bought the truck it had two cracked heads, and a blown head gasket. 400 do not keep as cool as other GM motors.

Besides that, can anyone recommend a REALLY good rad?

Re: Need a new radiator

I have not realy found one rad better than the other. Proper size, and clean. I have hauled 16,000 lbs with the a/c on through the mountains in 110 deg heat with no problems and a stock three core rad.

Re: Need a new radiator

I had no problems with the Autozone 4 core copper brass. Running 5.3 with C20 and 4.56 gears. Had no problems with the old 4 core radiator until it started leaking. I towed a 5500 lb trailer and 800 lb bike in the bed to Arizona and back with no overheating. AC wasn't running though. Also have a large tranny cooler in front of ac condensor/ radiator. I'd go with the Oreillys or advanced radiator if had to do over again. The Autozone- Spectra premium radiator had reinforcement braces at top and bottom as wide as the core. You would have to modify a stock shroud to work. Good luck.

Re: Need a new radiator

Just bought a stock $150 OReillys radiator and the construction sucks. I needed a new one (the old one was too crappy to fix) and didn't have the money for anything else. The metal is folded over right where the rubber mounts go. To keep it from vibrating and sounding terrible I cut some thin piping and stuck that in there and its was still too tall for the bolts by a hair so I had to ziptie it to the fan! Its a work truck and really doesn't look that bad but I was still pretty frustrated.

I heard from some kid at a show that champion made a good radiator. he was really happy with his on his 67 Impala. Seams like they are a great value compared to summmit's aluminum radiator direct bolt on option. im gona buy one for my buddys truck next week. check out their website
