Ignition System Opinions Please

Im thinking of changing the distributor on my 250ci L6. Been looking at my options and just wondering what your opinions are on the two. So here its is Electronic Ignition Conversion Kits vs. Complete HEI distributor? Whats the best and who makes the best product?

Something to think of, if you go with an original Hei distributor you will be able to get replacement parts locally. That is the reason I went with one.

I've had both. Had a pertronix on my 230 and changed it out for a skip white HEI. The HEI was mucho better. JMHO.

The factory HEI is the practical choice. They are cheap, reasonably reliable (but not perfect), and you can get parts for them almost anywhere. I just can't stand the looks of them, which is why I have a Pertronix.

Re: Ignition System Opinions Please

Ok thanks, I end up getting a Hei distributor. Found one for sale with wires for $100 bucks. Should do the trick. Just have one more question. I know to hook it up i need to run 12v key power to the power terminal and hook my tach in and thats it. I was just wondering what the three pin wire at the base of the distributor is for?

That wire should connect to the coil in the cap. Make sure it is hooked up before you attempt to start the engine.

Those are the wires that hook the ignition module to the coil as Raycow said. Here is a link that shows the conversion and tons more. It's by Shifty and he did a great job.

Well I got too putting in the HEI yesterday. Wow what a difference. Runs alot better, more power, had starting issues before and hesitation when cold. All thats gone now. What a sweet deal for a 100 bucks.
