front clip color -- 68

I have a question about the original color of the front clip on a 68. From what I understand from other threads, the two tone package in 67 and 68 involved the cab roof being white. (The 50 Anniversaries may be an exception, with white also below the trim.) The 67 two-tones had the main color on the A-pillars and the 68 two-tones had white A-pillars, I understand.

But my question is for a 68, what controlled the color of the front clip? If the truck was a two-tone with a white roof, did that automatically make the front clip white? Was there ever a white front clip without the white roof? In other words, was the color of the front clip governed by the truck being designated a two-tone, or by something else?

Thanks for any help.

Re: front clip color -- 68

I have a whiteface grille on a solid 516 (Omaha) orange C/10 '68 Stepside outta Fremont. I bought the truck used in 1973, but I'm sure it's original. Also has white CHEVROLET letters on the tailgate. I bought a '68 front clip off a light metallic blue Suburban, to replace a deer-mangled front clip on my '67 K/10 Suburban. That one was painted silver to complement the light metal blue. My Sub was white, but I kept the silver finish. [I also got the tailgate from it.]
I have seen some orange trucks with blackfaces. There were a few color combos, they weren't all white.

If the cab roof was white, was the grill automatically white?

Re: front clip color -- 68

We've had quite a few discussions about this over the years. The only conclusion I can come to is that there are no hard and fast Rules regarding the whiteface vs greyface on 68 trucks.

Some rules I think we can apply are:

Full chrome trim on the face would get you a white face grill.

I think two tone 68's would get you a white face grill with chrome trim on the grill.

I've seen base 68's with both plain painted grey grills and white face/chrome trim on the grill. Some have heard rumor that some dealers installed grill chrome as a dress-up.

My guess is that in the middle of the 68 year run they started equipping ALL 68 grills with a white face chrome/hood lip fender eyebrow trim. Some folks think this was done to make the front of the truck more visible to others to meet federal requirements.

Re: front clip color -- 68

Thanks for everybody's comments. I had not realized that the white grill on my 68 was not original. After reading the comments on this thread, I asked my uncle, the original owner, and he said the grill was originally silver.

Re: front clip color -- 68

Dealers did have dress up kits as stated... I know a guy that deals in NOS parts and he told me last year that he had a full set, all in one package from an old dealer...

There were also white, chrome and silver bumpers too...

Re: front clip color -- 68

Maybe I answered my own question. I found the attached photo in another thread. Very interesting. I had not seen the argent silver grill before and had no idea before this weekend that was the original grill color on my 68.
