po cut steering ????

the guy i got the 63 from had unbolted everything but the cab, said he was getting ready to pull the cab so he cut the steering shaft wtf ??why didnt he just unbolt it from the box?? i was thinking maybe getting a a soild steel rod and welding a round plate to the end of the rod and drilling holes that bolts up to steering box in pic #2 and welding the two shafts together maybe with a sleeve thats slipped over both new rod and old steering shaft ? would that be safe?? never messed with streeing before....or should i just get a steering coulmn from junk yard ..and what year two use i dont want tilt , and something that bolts in? what would you do??

He was prob looking for an "easy way" and it's easier to cut the shaft than deal with rusty bolts...in the short run.

I would either get a junkyard steering column or a column from a swap meet. The aftermarket columns like the ones Ididit sells are nice, but are a little pricey to me.

I have an extra column from a 62 I think. If you want it, you can have it. You will have to come get it though.

Re: po cut steering ????

I think I have a couple also from the 64-66 columns. I can't say for sure if they are still around or not. Next time I go up to my shop I can take a look. You can have one ifyou want. I should be going up there in the next week or so to get my engine hoist.

Re: po cut steering ????

just a suggestion - now would be a perfect time to do a power steering conversion. 73-87 PS box, hoses and pump, one of Captianfab's PS box adapters, a Borgeson Ujoint or stock rag joint, and the column of your choice. Safe, easy, and no welding on critical steering components.

Drive around with standard steering in that thing for a while, and you'll wish you'd converted sooner.
