Need taller gears for my 62 Posi
I have an original 3.90 Posi in my 62 and need to know if the lower ring and pinion gears will work with my posi unit. There were 2 different ratios offered in that year and it looks like non posi came in either 3.30(?) or 3.90 and cant imagine the carriers being too different as they both fit the same housing. I know the old Ford 9" route is an option, but just spent a pile of dough on the wife's 56 Nomad makeover and need to keep this as econo as possible....
Anyone done this swap? Attached is a pic of the housing

What you have there is a 12 bolt truck rear differential. That should not be original to a '62 truck. If the backing plates are pressed on, then it is possible that your truck is a late production '62. The '63 12 bolts had the pressed on backing plates. On the 12 bolts the 4 series carrier works with 3.73 and lower gears (higher numerically) and the 3 series carrier works with 3.42 gears and higher gears (lower numerically).

I agree with the Captain. A stock 62 rear would have a round cover plate and a drop-out center section.
You are fortunate that a PO did the 12 bolt swap, because the gear selection is better and it is much easier to find a posi for it. I don't think anyone is making new posi units for the 62-earlier rear, and original ones are extremely scarce. Ray

As far as a Ford 9 inch swap. I have done this swap.
I have the original 3.70 gear ratio. Good road gear. Been wanting a 4.10 or 4.11 to give her a little more umph. I believe CaptainFab is correct on the posi rear end. Anyhoot... If you wanna do the 9 inch swap just hollar at me. I'll tell you what you need to do. Check out my build thread as well. I am very partial to 9 inch hineys. Thanks guys for the replies and I should have attached the other view which shows this is a 10 bolt rear, and pretty sure it's the original for '62 - at least the two I have. All the mounts and panhard brakets are stone stock original too. Having said that, I'm finding that I apparently have a couple rare rear ends but both were from different trucks from different sellers here in the NW. Let me know if this helps?

Not the best pic but you can see that what you have is not what is stock. I know that many have said the stock unit is not very strong. Myself would disagree with that. I have made too many 1/4 pass's to count with the stock set up with ET'S in the mid 11 second range best to date is a 11.10 pass. I run the snot out of that truck and that rear end has taken everything I can throw at it. I run a 27 inch tall slick that is 11 inches wide with a 5500 RPM launch.. Those tires hook like a monster. If I break it a 9 inch with 35 splines will go in it. But until then the stocker stays where it is at.

Wow, great info and thanks for solving this for me. I'm running a pretty healthy 400 ponies in my TPIS 350 backed up by a performance built 700R4 so its good to know the rear will stay together when my foot gets heavy! While it's very respectable 0-60 barking the tires in second, its mostly used for getting the boat to the lake (on time!) and not much for the racing but I'm an old horsepower raised boy from the 60's. Besides, the boat is pretty heavy too. I'm just mostly concerned about getting the freeway RPM's down about another 500 or so and need to do the math on the best ratio now that I know the options are there.
The best part is getting trade offers on the boat launch for brand new Silverado's and turning them down!

Ah yes a Dana 44. I always relate those to GMC's with leaf springs in these trucks and I forget they did come on coil suspensions too. If you step up to a 3.73 that is a pretty good gear to run behind a 700R4. Of course that is somewhat dependant on what tire size you're running.
Than's a real nice looking truck. I especially like the back end. That's different and nice. Do you have a bigger pic of the front of your truck?

Hope no one minds if I hijack the thread a bit more...
The talk about brakes makes me think about the last summer before I tore the truck down for the frame off.. I was at a local car show/ parts swap meet. There was a guy there in a Z06 vette, a big sign in the front of the car at the show listing all the super duper go fast parts yada yada.. Long story short we leave at the same time and we know that we want to run them!!! Well we get the chance and in front of the vette is a 75 econline van going maybe 35 in a 65, so all clear the guy in the vette drops the hammer tires haze and the rear slides out and he is going around this van. I am right on his rear end and hammer the throttle well I almost park the truck in the back of the vette. I swear this guys eyes are the size of cue balls No chit.. I toy with him back on and off the gas and he sees that if he moves over I am going to get around so he does and I go rolling by .. little small block at 7600 rpm ( what a sound) so I get by and then go to stop for my turn...... AHHHH yes four wheel drum brakes.. I am two footing the pedal , with my hands under the wheel trying to push harder... I go smoking past my turn.. ... I get the old girl stopped and the front shoes are smoking so bad it looks like the truck is on fire!!! ... Was able to limp it home to find that all four shoes had shed the lining.. and made a big mess inside the drums.. SO I am looking forward to the new disc brakes.. I had so much fun changing everything I could get a plasma cutter or mig welder to reach on this truck, it's getting hard to remember everything...but here's a brief list of the majors;
88 Chev Celebrity headlights -the top view line angles followed the curve of the front end perfectly so they could be aligned. I had to cut a pocket into the core support but not too radical. 1/8 X 1" flat bar v-cut in the middle to follow curved front after headlights were installed. Made the combs first and got the shape I wanted then made the bars. The outer ends attach with screws so I can get to the headlights for servicing. I originally planned to do in aluminum, but later decided on steel for cost and the mono paint scheme 88 Acura door handles - once again they have a curve that fits the door perfect. Most effort then was making a fulcrum linkage to activate the stock inner door latch...then a trick to get the door locks working but thats a whole story in itself.... 86 Blazer mirrors - I really liked how the shape followed the cab lines. legnthened the posts and built the mounting bracket inside the door, frenched in some tubing with a rubber gromet in the bottom. 72 C-10 tailgate sacrificed its ends with support arms to be cut into the 62 tailgate before the custom rolled panel was welded in. I replaced the latch springs with lighter ones on the ends so I could use a tailgate latch from a 66 El Camino mounted to the inside of the tail gate. The tonneau cover has a hidden release so you can get into it after rolling up. 72 Sport bumper with 66 Lincoln backup lights frenched in, and notched for the 4" exhaust tips (I stole that look off my G37 daily driver) The trailer hitch reciever is hidden behind the license plate that flips up when needed for boat hauling duty. 72 steel bed floor shortened 20'' to fit the short box. It was amazing how all the bolt holes lined up! A freind gave me a 70 Buick Riviera so it got to donate power window regulators that I siamezed into the stock regulators. The steering column was also used. 92 Silverado bench and the front mounting holes lined right up to stock! 86 IROC Z28 instrument cluster modified to fit the stock 62 housing. I used the whole wiring harness from the Z28 so the VSS in the speedo was used with the FI computor.

Sorry I forgot to mention the 3rd brake light came from a 96 Suburban and it fits perfectly under that back eyebrow curve. I actually bought one brand new when I was first building the truck - saw a new Burb going down the freeway and I just knew that LED light was the future for us all!

pic of the thrird light please!!!! I have been struggling with this on my own truck as even with LED tail lights I have a bad feeling about a grey hair trying to park there caddie into the box of my truck

Sorry, had to run out to the garage and snap a pic for you. Your fear is exactly what motivated me!! Way too much work to get bumped.
BTW, I have a camera mounted above the license plate pointed right at the hitch ball for backing up to the trailer - did that after a few "hitching by feel" incidents required repainting the bumper. Let me know if this helps or need a better shot
