Questions for 66 chevy pickup

I have a lot of questions and hoping someone will be able to help answer some of them. I am new at this so please be patient. First question is what steering column can be used for power steering while I leave the key location on the dash? Also it had a inline 250 motor, 6 cylinder, wanting to switch to a small block, will I need new frame pads or will the old ones work for the motor mount? Anyone have an idea on which would be the best chemical stripper to clean the firewall, or any suggestions? I will be switching to disc brakes and I have stock spindles from a 66, would any other year fit this?

Your stock steering column will work, you just need a box and pump from another truck plus the box plate adapter from CaptainFab. Power steering is an easy swap.

<edit> I used the box and pump from a '75 when I built my '69. Cheap and parts a plenty.

First of all, welcome to the forum from SouthCentral Kansas.

With the right fab skills, you can adapt almost any steering column to these trucks, but the most popular seems to be the 73 - 87 Chevy/GMC truck columns. There are a ton of threads with information about this swap on the forum. Use the search function.

I am not familiar with a 256, but then I am not the most experienced builder around. The 230 and 250 I6 motors use the same perches as the 283, 305, 327 and 350. There may be other blocks that can use the same perches as well. These all will bolt up to the same bell housing as well as far as I can tell. Again, all of this is on the forums.

I have no idea about the degreasers/strippers and you already have the thread on the suspension/brake swap so I won't go there.

I've used the Dollar General store brand of oven cleaner for degreasing. It
works the best. Although i've only used it on the chassis/suspension, and wasn't to worried about it effecting the paint. I think it was a post from this forum awhile ago that said the Dollar General brand worked better than all the other types of cleaners

When going from an inline to a V8, the clutch linkage has an extra piece that you get rid of and the remainder bolts right to the V8 block. As mentioned, on the motor mounts, an inline six has the same mounts as a V8, but there is just an extra part that reaches to the inline six you can get rid of. I swapped mine and didn't have to make any changes.
