Camper specials were a option on 3/4 ton trucks designed for hauling a bed-mounted camper. Usually they had heaveir springs, 350 or 400 engines, and lower gears.

Custom Camper is the correct term, Camper special is a F#%D term.

The GMC Camper Special is the same as a Longhorn in most cases.
It looks like the name Camper Special was both an option, (long bed with heavy springs, HD shocks, and sway bars) and then it was also a seperate model indicating the 133 ionch wheel base that is more commonly called a Longhorn (chevy's name for the same truck)
Click on the longhorn website in my signiture for all the info you are looking for.

Ok I should clear up that, I was refering to 67-72's :p

Did they call them Custom Campers in 67-68?
I am pretty sure they did.

I can't stand when people look at the badge on my truck and say "oh its a Camper special"

I've got a 69 GMC Custom Camper. Says it on the doors. no where else. Had 3 gas tanks, wood bed foor, and it says on the glove box door that it had a 296 V-8 (Not a typo, that's what it says). Anyhow, I need to figure out what gears it has in it because at 70, the engine whines like crazy.

I've seen a couple of GMC custom campers that were not longhorns. Now I'm confused, is it Custom Camper or Camper Special. I think it was Custom Camper.

Not all custom campers are longhorns. Come to think of it, the only longhorns I have seen have had the longhorn script on them. Mine is just a long bed. When I got it, I was offered the camper but passed on it. I figured it must have been infested with black widows and mice, since it had been sitting for so many years. As I recall, they ended up giving it away to a Ford truck owner.

I think we decided that the "custom camper" designation was for 67-72 models, and the "camper special" was for 73 and up???

One more thing to add, Custom Camper packages were available on both 1/2 and 3/4 ton trucks

No GMC 133 inch trucks came with Longhorn badges, none I have ever seen, nor none I have heard of.
