Can I eliminate The Cardboard in front of the tank?

Pulled the Tank on my 72 and the cardboard is trashed. Can I eliminate it? I was thinking of spraying the tank with a sound deadener or maybe building something similar with thin abs and covering it. I'm going to line the cab behind it anyway with dyno mat. Not sure if this is one of those items that serves some secret purpose or not.

Thanks

I think it was purely cosmetic. It's hard to find an old truck with one nowadays because they fall apart so easily. I've taken them out of 2 trucks that I have owned without any ill side effects.

Re: Can I eliminate The Cardboard in front of the tank?

My 71 had ugly green carpet on the floors and the tank. I ripped it all out when I installed factory style rubber mat and heat/sound deadener on my floors. Cardboard was probably cheap sound deadener or something to keep any raised edges on the tank from rubbing the back of the seat (guesses)

I suspect it was GM's cheap way to cover the gas tank (cosmetics). I doubt it did anything for sound deadening in these old trucks. I took mine out of both of my trucks.

I popped for the reproduction cardboard. Believe me, you don't want to go there. It's a b**** to get all the creases right and it still doesn't fit well.

Thanks Everyone, I just wasn't sure if it had some magical purpose. as stupid of a question as it was, it's one of those things someone might have had a purpose behind it. At least now my gremlins will have no place left to hide in the cab.
