Severe rust !

I have a 1999 Silverado new body style with a severely rusted out frame. It is non driveable. Just wondering if this is a common problem or just my bad luck. Oh, by the way it is a 1500 extended cab 4x4 8' bed with 105,000 miles. It has no off road abuse, and was purchased new by me.

Re: Severe rust !

2003 up are the new "hydra formed" frame rails...are they using water under high pressure to form them or are they using acid? I worked at Exide batteries for 1 year and stuff there would rot..even stailless steel..in a few weeks...Had to fix stuff everyday..This should get everyone together that has one and get a recall for bad frames..

How many rusted brake lines caused wreckes so far? brake lines should be all stailless due to the rust and high pressures of ABS today..They are cheaping out, make the most money for the least cost..

An example..2010 suburban is $70,000 ..in 1989 i had a new s10 it was 6,300 on the lot..

Re: Severe rust !

It is strange that you are having that issue. I have a 2001, and I live in Very Salty Central NY. I definitely have rust starting on the truck, but the frame is solid.

Sorry to hear this.

Re: Severe rust !

my 2000 has all the typical rust, rockers cab corners, bed etc but the frame is solid. it just has surface rust and all the coating peeling off. Im in seacoast NH and mine came from northen NH in the snow belt where they use lots of salt. my dads 99 on the other hand has had all brake lines replaced but the frame and body are still decent. both are 4wd and driven yr round.

Parking over dirt all the time will cause un wanted rust, not all of us have a paved drive way.

Re: Severe rust !

It's pretty sad that after almost 100 years of building trucks, Chevy/GMC still can't build one that doesn't rust in the "typical places". My 2000 GMC is developing rust above the rear wheels. Pisses me off every time I look at it. My brother recently bought a 2003-ish GMC with the quadra-steer. It has plastic bed sides. I kinda laughed a first when he told me that, but now I'm kind of jealous. Plastic won't rust.

Re: Severe rust !

Slammed67, Treat it with rust killer, paint some rust paint over it and install the black plastic flares. The flares also help keep the salt from "sand blasting" the paint off of the edges of the fender.

My Z71 came from Indianapolis. It spent it's first 5 years of life up there. It has some light flaking in places, but nothing major. Body is still rust free on the outside and underneath, but I did have to treat my door bottoms on the inside. I wish it was an SC truck, but I got such a steal on it I couldn't pass is up. I got it for 15,900 in early 2005, which at the time was about 3-4K below similar SC trucks I found in my area.

Thanks for the advice, but don't think the flares would look good on my truck...

Re: Severe rust !

I gotcha. There are the small chrome ones that go around the wheel wells, those might look better.

Re: Severe rust !

at my local junk yard, theres a truck, a 99, old body that had a plow in it. it rusted so bad that the plow frame literally broke the truck frame one day while driving.
