Barn doors to lift gate.
Our own board.....COOL! Anyone switch from barn doors to a tail/lift gate set up? Is this an easy swap or a nightmare? Thanks!

I think it is easy. The holes and slots are all ready there for the bolts and hinges.

Do you have any pics showing how the tail gate and lift gate mount? That way I can check my burb to see if I have the mounting points and get an idea how much work would be involved. Thanks!

I don't have pics but, open your doors.Along the top edge of the opening you should see 2 rubber plugs a bout 2"long.Also along the bottom there should be the same.

I was thinking about going from lift gate to barn doors. But got to looking and have some questions about the catchs in the middle for the barn doors. How does a person attach the top catch?

My recollection is that the base (behind the rear mat or carpet hold-down plate) is different between the 2 styles. My dad wanted to switch from tailgate to barn doors on his '74 (similar design), but found he couldn't do it without finding a donor for the baseplate and having it welded in. Needless to say, he still has a tailgate!

I HAVE A 68 CHEVY PANEL TRUCK (THAT I HAVEN'T RESTORED YET) & I JUST BOUGHT A 72 GMC BURB OFF EBAY, THAT I HAVEN'T PICKED UP YET (IT REQUIRES A ROADTRIP WITCH I WILL EMBARK ON MONDAY) SO I DON'T REALLY KNOW A WHOLE LOT ABOUT THESE TRUCKS, ALTHOUGH I'VE BEEN RESTORING 67-72 CHEVY PICKUPS & BLAZERS FOR 18 YEARS. I WORKED AS A LAYOUT INSPECTOR FOR GM TRUCK & BUS IN FLINT MICH. DURING THE 80s, WHERE WE BUILT SUBURBANS, BLAZERS & PICKUPS. AT THIS TIME THEY USED ENTIRELY DIFFERENT PLATFORMS FOR BARN DOOR & TAILGATE/LIFTGATE MODELS & THEY WERE IN NO WAY INTERCHANGABLE. BUT THAT WAS THE EIGHTIES SUBURBANS.... MAYBE THEY WERE INTERCHANGABLE BACK IN THE LATE 60s & EALY 70s.

Re: Barn doors to lift gate.
Did you ever do the swap? I was wondering how hard it was to swap from barn to a lift gate....

Re: Barn doors to lift gate.
I found frizzle fry and rokcrin both had done the mod that I will do in their tahoe builds.....
ps most other forums you get reamed out for starting a new thread when there is a thread already out there on that topic. And I didnt think to see if the OP had been on lately....

Re: Barn doors to lift gate.
The easyest way to change from barn doors to lift gat is to change out he lower door sill sheet metal with on from a tail gate truck. I have all of the parts and just gettting started with this project.

Re: Barn doors to lift gate.
I wouldn't worry about getting reamed. If someone dosn't want to read the thread they don't have to click on it. I don't worry about my threads bieng up to anyone elses standards and you shouldnt have to either. I just thought it was crazy how old the thread was. I usually only notice that it is an old thread because there are a bunch of names/avatars that I havent seen before or in a while.

Re: Barn doors to lift gate.
If you do hidden hinges you shouldn't need a donor liftgate header panel since you will be creating your own hinge mount points.

Re: Barn doors to lift gate.
Its been awhile since Ive read your tahoe thread, I had just read rokcrin's and he gave credit to you for the design of the hinges so I assumed you had done the same with your build, but I really wasnt sure. Ill have to find when you did that mod among the 50 some odd pages on that build lol. I plan on doing the liftgate/barn door idea if I can. Although I do really like the way you did a one piece!!!
